My Aussie puppy has a UTI from food. Is this common? What can I do?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 6 days old | 20 lbs

My red merle aussie puppy is having a urinary and matrix infection due to a food reaction according to the veterinarian diagnosis, is this something common to Aussies or do you have any suggestions on what can I do?

I am so sorry to hear about Tesla. We do not normally see urinary tract infections as a result of food intake. The only infection we may sometimes see as a result of a food allergy would be a skin or ear infection secondary to food allergies (the food doesn't cause the infection but causes inflammation in the skin which can predispose to infection). If your dog was eating a raw or contaminated food then the bacteria could cause GI issues or if severe a systemic infection. These are not issues specific to a certain breed of dog. It may be helpful for you to use our consultation service for a more in-depth discussion of what is going on with Tesla. I am not sure what you mean by a "matrix" infection (perhaps a mistype).

A urinary infection is not typically caused by a food reaction and not common in Aussies. I am not sure what you mean by a "matrix" infection. If your puppy has a urinary tract infection then she needs an antibiotic to treat. Maybe switch her to a high quality puppy food if she was having a problem with the type you were feeding. Hope she feels better soon!
