Why is my dog so tired after starting high blood pressure medicine?

She is on a lot of meds and probably still not completely out of the woods yet. Medications such as ondansetron can also be a little sedating for dogs as well. It would be hard to put an exact timeline on when she'll be better, but energy should gradually return as she begins to eat more, and her body finishes fighting what is making her ill.

Great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer. If your dog is eating and drinking normally and the issues that necessitated her hospitalization have resolved, I would be far less concerned. Until she has completed the courses of medication, it is ultimately impossible to determine if her lethargy is secondary to medication or due to illness. Consider calling your vet to discuss if any of the medications can be discontinued or if any doses can be reduced to limit potential lethargy. I hope that all goes well!

Both of hear medications are within the published dose ranges for a dog Kimber’s size, but gabapentin can sometimes cause sedation and this could be the culprit. You may want to give your vet a call and see if they might recommend reducing the dose or even skipping a dose.

Lethargy can be a side effect in the first few days of Trilostane therapy, but typically resolves after a week or so of treatment. In some cases, giving the medication every other day for the first week or two can be beneficial to decrease the incidence of side effects, but you should call Josie's vet to discuss any possible dose changes. No worries. Just about all anti-anxiety medicaitons used in pets have a sedative effect in the first 2 weeks of use until steady levels are achieved in the bloodstream. As long as he is eating his food by end of day then I would not be too concerned. Also check his gums and make sure they are a nice pink color, which indicates his blood pressure is good.
