My dog has ticks. How long until he's okay and his fur looks normal?

If it continues to look superficial (as it looks on the picture), you can consider applying a thin film of triple antibiotic on it in case it is just a mild infection. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, I would guess that this is a leftover from when the tick embedded into Zeke. A tick will release a substance to cement itself in, as well as, a substance to allow feeding. Both of these can set up a local inflammatory response that can result in temporary hair loss, to permanent thickening of the skin, neither of which are a sign of tick disease. Watch for lethargy, loss of appetite, lameness, ocular discharge or anything else that might worry you about Zeke. A simple blood test can detect the presence of most of the common tick diseases.

Those are ticks. You can purchase a tick preventative at a veterinary clinic. If your dog has a lot of ticks, that can make him anemic (ticks suck blood from dogs and that is why they are attached to the skin). Dogs can also become sick with “tick fever” from ticks. This can include lymes dz, ehrlichia, and anaplasmosis. Anemia and tick fever can make your dog lethargic. A veterinarian can examine him and run some bloodwork to see if he has anemia or tick fever. Also, if he is covered in ticks, a dip will help get rid of them. I recommend you take him to see a vet as soon as possible to get rid of the ticks and have him examined.

As long as the area on Miley's skin looks okay (no significant redness or swelling), then you don't need to take her to the vet right away after finding an attached tick. If the tick was attached for long enough to transmit disease, like Lyme disease, Ehrlichia or Anaplasma, then it takes about 6 months for a blood test to diagnose an infection. Unfortunately, there are no measures to take to stop any of these diseases if she's already been infected. I would certainly mention this tick attachment to Miley's vet the next time she goes in for an exam because her vet will most likely recommend running a tick-borne disease blood test about 6 months from the date of tick exposure. In the long run, definitely add some tick prevention in for Miley. Seresto collars, K9 Advantix II, Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Credelio are all great options to discuss with your vet. Hi there. Monitor Hogan for any signs of illness over the next month. Generally, tick-borne diseases cause non-specific signs such as fever, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy within the first 4 weeks after a tick bite. Dogs can get a skin infection or irritation from a tick bite - it is hard to tell exactly what they look like without a photo - but if you are concerned have your veterinarian take a look. And if you notice that he is not feeling well, take him to a vet right away. In the future definitely plan to use a veterinarian-approved tick product and check Hogan for ticks every time he comes inside.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tofy! We would need a closer picture of the tick and we would need to see the under side as well to identify the tick. I would recommend the Seresto collar or the oral flea and tick preventatives like Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto. Vinegar does not kill any species of tick. In my experience the natural products do not work for ticks or fleas and the risk of the diseases they transmit is greater than the use of non-natural products. He needs a tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or even Advantix over the counter can kill ticks quickly and prevent them for 30 days. Please get him on a tick preventative soon and visit your vet soon if you notice any symptoms of tick bite disease (i.e. anorexia, lethargy, fever or lameness). You should also avoid areas that he could be exposed to with high tick populations. Keep him out of the woods and consider getting your yard treated for.
