Why does my dog have swollen hives or bumps with no known cause?

I can see small bumps right under the hair on Prince. These can be an allergic reaction, or hives. This can be caused by a number of conditions such as fleas, environmental or food allergies, or a reaction to something in her environment. Well that's pretty odd! It could be a bug bug, a minor trauma outside while running around (so basically a big blood blister), or even the start of hives from an allergic reaction (but it would be an usual hive). A mass wouldn't show up so quickly. I would recommend monitoring Reggie closely for the next few hours to make sure it's not getting worse. If no changes, call your vet in the morning to schedule an appointment, but if keeps getting bigger or you notice any more changes in Reggie, head to an emergency clinic.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poo Chevy! It is likely that the bumps are hives and Chevy is suffering from an allergic reaction. Sometime we never know the inciting cause but insects or environmental allergens are the most common, unless he is receiving medications or was recently vaccinated (in the last 24 hours). The standard treatment for hives is benadryl and steroids. Ideally you should have him seen by your Vet. If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!
