Why is my overweight lab's hip swollen and fluid-filled after a fall?

Being overweight will not help Aarfaa, as it puts extra strain on her joints. She could have a problem with her hips or with her cruciate ligaments causing the limping. Because this has been going on for a few months, she needs to see a vet. I would take her into one first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her. Hi, Joints swellings are caused by an accumulation of fluid in the joint. This condition may be caused by different conditions most commonly: degenerative joint disease (DJD - arthritis), injuries, infectious disease (chronic infection and some tick borne disease) , immune mediated (immune-mediated polyarthritis , lupus) , cancer (mostly bone tumors), swellings due to blood accumulation in the joint of dogs with clotting disorders. Gout is very rare and actually never been accurately documented in dogs. I would suggest to take her to the vet again to give pain relief if painful and try to diagnose the underlying cause. Rapid swelling like this is due to some sort of fluid. This could be blood, serum or joint fluid at this location and is often associated with some sort of trauma/injury. If he is also limping, then I reccomend having him seen by a vet soon. If he is not limping, then the swelling should slowly go down in the next two to three weeks. Since it's been ongoing for a couple of months, even if it was broken, the original break would be healed by now, but I would be concerned about arthritis in the joint. She is an older dog (based on the age you put in her pet info), and arthritis is common in older dogs. Rest certainly would be indicated with swelling, but I would also recommend a vet visit to get this area x-rayed to look for signs of arthritis to confirm if that is what is causing the problem. Pain medication may also be indicated for her as well, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medication, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would be concerned that Layla has an abscess if it is filled with pus and blood. this will be very painful to her, and she needs to see a vet as soon as possible for it. She will need it drained if it has swollen up again, and she will also need antibiotics to treat the infection. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can give her pain medications as needed. As for the swollen vaginal area, she could be suffering from vaginitis which is inflammation of the vagina. This is more common in spayed females, and something that will need to be examined and treated by a vet as well.

I'm sorry Nikkita isn't doing well! She is a large breed dog, and she could be suffering from hip dysplasia causing the swelling. Hip dysplasia is common in large breed dogs. She could also have severe arthritis. I would take her into the vet for a lameness exam and x-rays to diagnose what is causing her hip to be swollen so she can be treated.

It is most likely caused by arthritis (inflammation of the joints), which is quite common in large breed. you will need to take Bolt to the vet to get it confirmed (usually xray needed), then the vet will discuss with your regarding treatment options.
