Thos could be a tumor or severe infection. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing and have him seen by your veterinarian. Of he is painful or restless, consider a visit to the nearest veterinary ER. The veterinarian may perform a fine needle aspirate to collect samples for pathology if it is a mass. At the very least, medication can be given to calm Dopey or relieve pain if indicated. There is nothing OTC that can safely be given. Many OTC medications can be toxic to dogs or are easily overdosed.

You really should have this evaluated as soon as possible on the chance that he may need to be on antibiotics or need to be neutered. If he has swollen lymph nodes then he could have an infection or possibly lymphoma. Your vet can run blood-work and aspirate the lymph node to determine why it is enlarged. If he has an infection than he would need an antibiotic to treat. If he has a problem with a disc in his back then he would also need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jiggy! I am concerned that the swelling in his groin is a lymph node, a mass or an inguinal hernia. I recommend having an ultrasound or an X-ray to see if it is a hernia. If it is not a hernia and they think it is a lymph node or a mass then have a fine need aspirate (FNA) or sedated him to do a wedge biopsy of the swelling/mass. Hello Kirsti. Since Cu Chulainn (the mighty hound!) is not neutered, the swelling is likely his prostate. If this swelling occurs more often, if he urinates blood, or if the swelling does not recede again, you should have that examined by your veterinarian, as he may have a prostate problem.

However, a small orange sized mass on a dog Mouse's size is considerably large and warrants a veterinary exam. The lump can be an enlarged lymph node, a mass, or a hernia. It’s possible that Gunner may have an inguinal hernia where there is a rift in the abdominal wall near the genitalia where intestines are able to protrude out. This can be a life threatening condition where the intestines may become strangulated/twisted and start to become necrotic. Other possibilities include scrotal hematomas (the empty scrotum filling up with blood) and abscesses (pockets of infection). As he is painful, the safest option would be to take him to an emergency veterinary hospital. If it is a hernia, emergency surgery would likely be indicated. Good luck!
