Why is my dog swaying, acting nervous, and growling at unseen things?

Hi. I am very sorry about Holly being so sick. I am very concerned about her pale gum color. She could have a true emergency going on right now - and she should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Pale gums are related to lack of perfusion or anemia (low red blood cell count). Any of the reasons that cause pale gums are a true emergency and she should be examined right away. I'm so sorry your pet is so ill. It sounds like Holly may have an infection. Bacterial infection causes pet to shake and be uncomfortable, they are also lethargic not eating and have a fever. You can certainly check her rectal temperature and if it is above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, then an infection is likely and she needs to see a vet. I see she isn't spayed so it is very likely she has an infection of her uterus (pyometra) which can happen at any time and can be life threatening if not treated quickly. This sounds very serious unfortunately. The first thing that comes to mind is if she got in to a toxin or medication. I would take her to the ER right away and if she did get in to something, take that with you. She will need immediate care

I would recommend bringing her to a veterinarian right away. I am unsure how long she was out but her behavior is very abnormal for her age. I am worried that she ingested something toxic or was traumatically injured. It is hard for me to discern without a physical exam but I would recommend an exam, some bloodwork and maybe even some radiographs depending.

Kelly could be showing signs of a neurologic disease if she seems disoriented during these episodes where she seems to hear or see things. It’s also possible that she has developed anxiety, or that she is painful. The vomiting could be a sign of a gastrointestinal problem. I think it sounds like you should make an appointment with your vet to have her examined and discuss the behavior change in more detail. A thorough physical exam would rule out pain and potentially a neurologic problem.

I am so sorry to hear that Holly is going through so much. Often when I see a dog who is acting the way you describe I find that they are painful in the neck or the back. I worry that she may have a slipped disc that may be causing her pain and her instability. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If there is an emergency veterinarian available tonight then at least she could get some pain medication and be more comfortable until you can see your regular veterinarian. All these signs are very concerning and point to a possible viral infection or metabolic disease. You need to take your dog to a veterinarian or PetER right away as he may be having a serious infection that needs to be tended to. Distemper comes to mind, a liver shunt and/or meningitis.
