What are these strange marks on my dog's belly? Is it serious?

It is very difficult to tell from a photo exactly what is going on here. I am concerned if these areas could be bleeding under the skin. From the photos the areas don't appear raised which is why I am concerned they could be this type of bruisng, also called ecchymosis. If you press your finger onto the area and remove it, and there is not a white spot, then this is a sign this is ecchymosis and your dog should be seen right away because it could have a bleeding disorder. If you press against the red area and when you remove your finger it blanches (turns white) and then turns red again, then it is less concerning in terms of the urgency of being seen and is more likely an actual skin issue. If the area is raised or crusted then this could be inflammation due to infection with bacteria or yeast. We can have immune system over-reactions that can result in red inflammed areas of skin. We can also in more rare cases see cancers that can affect the skin. A vet can examine the skin and determine what testing may be indicated- this could include cytology of the skin, culture of the skin, biopsy, or bloodwork depending on their exam findings. This lesion could indicate a local bacteria infection, possibly ringworm, an insect bite, or just an area of rotation of unknown cause. You could continue to monitor if you feel comfortable and if it does not go away within a few days I would reconsider seeing your veterinarian to ensure it's nothing contagious like ringworm. However if it starts to grow, bleed, become raised, or seems painful it should be seen sooner. In the meantime you could consider cleaning it with a very mild soap and warm water and keeping it clean and dry during the day. As there is a possibility it could be ringworm wash your hands thoroughly after handling the site.

This looks potentially like a superficial skin infection. Skin infections like this can occur secondary to allergies, fleas, or sometimes to contact with an irritating substance. I would recommend having your veterinarian take a look. They might recommend topical treatment or an oral antibiotic, or they might want to do some testing as well.

Hi and thanks for your request. These are epidermal collarettes.; they are 'footprints' of a vesicular or pustular lesion. They are therefore a common lesion type in canine pyoderma, which is a type of superficial skin infection. An allergy could be present, but the signs are solely compatible with an infection. Disinfection can be provided with hibiscrub diluted with water 1:10 twice daily. Make sure to rinse off the solution and leave the skin dry. The signs should resolve in the next 4-5 days, if not a check up will be needed.

This looks like a mild Staph bacterial infection of the skin. I suggest you use these medicated pads on those areas daily for about a week. If no improvement then have your vet check him out. Hi there. From your photos, it appears that Pepper has some mild infection of her skin. This can be caused by an allergy to something, or allergy to food. Bacteria likes to invade skin that is inflamed and a small infection will develop. I would recommend taking Pepper to you vet for an exam and skin testing. Those spots on Ben's could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can also check or treat for fleas. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching and he may need to wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesions don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications.
