My 9-month-old dog suddenly stopped drinking milk. Is this normal?

At 4 weeks of age it is normal for a puppy to only be drinking milk. Ideally your puppy should still be nursing from his mother at this age. If he is already away from his mother then you will need to continue feeding him puppy milk replacer until about 6 weeks of age. You can try to leave some moistened kibble with him to get him interested in it but at this age he should be still getting most of his nutrition from milk. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Maverick has always had milk, he can probably tolerate small amounts until 1 year. It should not be his primary source of food. However, many puppies quickly lose the ability to digest milk, so if Maverick is having any diarrhea, the milk would be the first thing I would stop. Best of luck to you and Maverick!

As dogs age and get weaned off of their mother's milk, they lose an enzyme that breaks down the protein in milk. Without this enzyme they can get diarrhea and other gastrointestinal upsets when they drink milk. Generally, we advise owners not to feed their dogs milk once they are over three months old. An allergy to the milk is also possible, but not very common and would similarly cause gastrointestinal problems. I hope that helps and all is well with Snowie.

When puppies are being weaned from their mother, you should mix puppy milk (not cow or goats milk) with canned food to get them to eat it. At Brixy's age, he no longer needs milk because he has teeth. After a certain age (usually 2-3 months) puppies cannot digest milk properly. I would transition him to a puppy food (dry food is fine, but you can add puppy canned food if you wish). It is not a problem for him to poop once daily as long as he is eating, drinking, and active and not having vomiting or diarrhea. Good luck and kisses to Brixy!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Bruno is very cute! I think you are saying that Bruno doesn't eat his dog food well but likes milk? Dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant and ingesting milk isn't an appropriate diet for an almost adult lab. Bruno needs to eat a commercial adult dog food. If he doesn't like what you are feeding him: add water or a little canned food with or without water or change brands of food. I am not sure based on your post if his appetite change is a new thing. The two brands that seem to be most palatable are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Also, as long as your pet is healthy, its ok if he skips a couple meals. Dogs are smart and they often train humans to give them something else. Have him examined if illness or a medical cause is suspected. I don't recommend to give milk as it may upset Rooney's stomach. Puppy milk is fine to give Prince, but given that he is one month of age, he really doesn't need it. As his age, water is the only liquid he needs. Please do not give him buttermilk. Dairy products cause GI upset in dogs, and he does not need it. I hope this helps!
