What is this sticky bald spot on my dog's rear after a hike?

Scabbing/hair loss can be caused by a number of things including infections from bacteria/yeast/fungus on the skin, allergies, metabolic changes internally, wounds or scratches, parasites, and more. Making sure Rosie is on a good monthly flea and tick preventive may help if you see parasites. If the area is not improving or is expanding in size it is best to have your vet take a look. They may recommend taking a skin scraping of the area to have it tested for possible causes. Be sure to also let your vet know of any other changes such as changes in appetite or energy levels. As some infections can be contagious to other pets and people, washing your hands after handling the area is best to help minimize spread.

It does look like a small scab. I would just leave it alone and watch Sophie for a few days. If she seems to be itching it or bothered by it, or if it bleeds or exudes a sticky discharge, then she needs to be checked by a vet.

It doesn't appear to be related to fleas. It could be an injury but it could also be the start of a tumor. I would recommend you leave it alone and monitor it for about a week. Don't pick at it or apply anything to it. If it is just a scab from an injury it should be much improved if not all the way healed in that time frame. This looks like a scab. He could have gotten this after a little bug bite, a local skin infection, a minor injury from being in the yard, or something else. Since it is so small, I would not be too concerned right now. If it isn't healing, you see discharge, you find more spots, or this spot gets larger, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he needs any oral meds or other treatment to help it heal. It's really difficult to know what this is without seeing it. Usually these scabby patches indicate an infection. It may be worthwhile getting some medicated pet wipes from the pet store and wiping the area twice a day. Usually these infections clear-up within two weeks by keeping it clean. If the lesion is not getting better, or is getting worse in the next week, then I recommend having a vet evaluate it a bit further. There are other potential causes of this that can get much worse if not treated soon. I hope that helps and Daisy gets better soon.

It looks like it was healing under the scab, however I am a little concerned about the area on the leg where this lesion is. THis is very close to the knee joint, which may mean that your dog had pain in this area and therefore was gnawing on it. I recommend you have this examined by your veterinarian a there may be a problem with his knee joint.

Poor guy. This looks like a "hot spot" or superficial pyoderma (infected area) on the skin. This can be caused by an initial knick or scrap on the skin that later got infected and scabbed over. Flea bites are a common cause of hot spots, so its best to keep Bono on flea prevention year round it they are common in your area. Your vet should be able to prescribe some oral antibiotics to help this resolve completely. The wound spray you have may be sufficient, so its best to take it in with you to Bono's vet appt for your vet to see. If not, then the vet will likely recommend another topical to use.
