My Chiweenie is squinting with eye discharge. Can I use OTC meds?

If you are seeing green eye discharge in Chacha's eyes, this could indicate there is a problem such as dry eye, which should be diagnosed / treated by a veterinarian. There is specific treatment for dry eye that you will not find over the counter (Optimmune ointment or Tacrolimus ointment) which helps stimulate tear production. The over the counter products simply lubricate the eyes and do not last long enough. You can try an over the counter dry eye medication for dogs such as OPTIXCARE, which you can find online. I recommend you use an E-collar so he doesn't rub the eye and cause a scratch on the surface of the eye. Do not put anything in the eye until you see your Vet. Ointments or drops for the eye are made specifically to be safe for use in the eye. Ointments for the skin are not safe to be put in the eye. I wish you the best and Nico a speedy recovery!

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. There is nothing you can do at home. He needs to be evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely serious and his eye health may be in jeopardy. I would discuss starting an eye drop called Zaditor (ketotifen fumarate) that can help with allergies. This is an over the counter medication and can be safely used in Lucky's eyes for allergies. Poor Zoey! No, please don't put contact solution in her eye - this will not help to treat the problem, and may burn and cause additional discomfort. Brown or yellow discharge like this is usually a sign of an eye infection, or a corneal injury of some kind such as a scratch or ulcer. I would recommend taking Zoey to the vet today for an exam - he/she can use a special stain to check for any injuries to the eye, and will likely prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment to treat the problem.
