My puppy has spreading sores on face, neck, and leg. What is it?

Rosie should see a veterinarian for a skin scrape in order to determine if she has Demodex. This is a mange mite that is most common in young puppies and presents with hair loss, red skin and pustules like you see in the photo. There are several very successful treatment options for this. It looks like he might have an allergic dermatitis and skin infection. It would be best to have your vet take a look at him to determine the best way to treat. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, culture, or biopsy, if needed, to help diagnose. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or other medications to help treat. You could also bathe him with a medicated shampoo, like DOUXO® Chlorhexidine and see if that helps.

Your description has me concerned about possible ringworm. I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. In the meantime please be cautious and use good hygiene. If it is ring worm then it can be contagious to people as well. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be fleas or mange. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Piper with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment .

It may be the start of a bacterial infection or the mange. Since it is spreading, I would have him checked as these require different medication to be treated. Just try to keep the area clean and dry until you get him checked.

Hello. I cannot say for sure what this is without a hands on exam and some simple tests, but your veterinarian would be able to solve this for you pretty easily. Mange in a puppy this young is not common, but a simple and quick skin scrape would determine if it is mange. More likely, it is a skin infection- this may be bacterial or fungal. Your veterinarian can also check this. Fungal infections can be very contagious (Ringworm), so it is important that you have this puppy looked at as soon as possible. I am sorry to hear about your puppy! These look like they could be pustules, or little pockets of infection. We can also occasionally see things like ringworm (a fungus) cause raised lesions, or foreign bodies like grass awns that migrate into the skin and cause swelling and infection. It is definitely odd! I would recommend bringing her to a veterinarian for an exam, as she may need to have the areas drained/tested and may need antibiotics to treat this.
