Why does my dog sit by me? Is hamster blindness a normal condition?

While it's unlikely that your hamster is contemplating the meaning of life when she stares off to space, it is possible that she may be ruminating on something, dozing or even snacking on a piece of food in her cheek. However if she is showing any other signs of confusion, circling, disorientation, etc that she doesn't snap out of if you get her attention, it may signal a problem and should be checked out. Otherwise, keeping her entertained with some new toys, a treat or some attention may help.

That is how I would interpret that action. Any prey animal that is sitting still and eating from your hand is likely pretty comfortable with the situation to be doing such a thing. Hope this makes sense.

Also, I would be concerned that the other hamster could have died secondary to something infectious and contagious and perhaps Sunflower could be affected by it. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for any possible issue so that it can be addressed on time. Best of luck!

Cataracts themselves are not painful. However, there can be any changes to the eye that can look like a cataract that may actually be something else. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. The eye does look a bit irritated. You can clean the spot with a washcloth to help keep the eye open and clear, and to allow you to inspect it for any wounds or additional irritation. If it doesn't clear up on its own after a day or so, seems to worsen, or the crusting continues or worsens, it would be best to have it examined by a vet in person to rule out any injuries or infections in the eye that could be causing it.

She may be painful and dehydrated and undernourished. An immediate check up at your local vet is required to have a better clinical picture and treat appropriately. Pain relief meds and eventually antibiotics (if there is any sign of infection) are possibly required.
