What's this single bite on my dog? Is it a mosquito or bug bite?

It is possible this is an insect bite. Fly bites in particular can look like a red ring with a central pallor (pale area in the middle). It is tough to tell from the photo what the central area looks like. If it is raised and looks like it is filled with yellow/pus, then this could be a pustule which is a sign of skin infection. If the center is flat with the skin and just pale in color, then a bug bite is more likely.

It looks like an insect bite or a small puncture wound. I suggest using a damp warm washcloth and mild soap to clean the area, wipe away all the soap and dry it well. Keep an eye on it and if it does not improve significantly in the next day or so, get him in to see you vet.

If this were my pet I would monitor this first to see if it goes away. It is hard to say if this is a bug bite because of all the hair and no close up to see if there is a small bite wound. You can check it yourself to see if you notice a small hole there, and then you have your answer. However, if you are unsure or can't find a hole, then its ok to wait and monitor this to see if it decreases in size and resolves on its own within the next 1-2 weeks. As long as it isn't causing any discomfort to Phoebe, then I wouldn't rush her in just yet. You can apply a very small amount of Neosporin to the area also. If it does not reduce in size or resolve within 1-2 weeks, then it should be checked by your vet to gather samples from the growth so that it can be properly classified. Thank you for the picture of Chipper's lesion. It appears to be a black fly bite. These lesions from the bite look bad, but typically they do not bother the pet. You don't need to do anything to treat it, these usually go away on their own over time. That being said, if this doesn't improve over the next week, it looks worse, or he's constantly itching it, then he will need to see a vet. I hope this helps!

Most often when we see a lesion like this on the skin it is the result of an insect bite, in particular a biting fly such as a black fly. If your dog is acting normally then I would just monitor the area. If the lesion grows in size, becomes raised or oozes a discharge, or your dog develops many more lesions, becomes lethargic or very itchy a vet exam is recommended.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to say from the pictures what this could be for sure. My suspicion is that this is a local reaction to an insect bite or sting. Other trauma might include something that poked into the skin and cause irritation. I would clean the are with diluted Betadine in sterile saline (a light brown mixture should result) and monitor. If it is worsening I would have a vet examine this. You can also give adult benadryl.
