How long can my dog wear shoes safely? When should I remove them?

They need to be a bit snug or they won't stay up. Just monitor him closely when he's wearing them. I would not recommend leaving them on longer than 30 minutes at a time (take them off for 10-15 min and then you can put them back on).

If his paw pads seem irritated you could try Musher’s Secret. You might want to put baby socks on his paws (if he’ll tolerate them) until the boots come in when he’s going outdoors.

Labradors are pretty big, hardy dogs. As long as they have boots to protect their feet from freezing they can probably tolerate at least a 30 Minute walk. However, I would not leave him out unsupervised in those temperatures. Best of luck in those cold temperatures! Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor Lucky! Place the back of your hand on the pavement, and if you can't hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot to walk him. It does sound like he may have burned his paws on the walk, and I would limit his walking for now to allow his paws to heal. When you do walk him, do it on grassy surfaces. Keep him inside as much as possible. You might consider getting him doggie booties to protect his paws when walking. I'd leave his paws along for now, keep an eye on them. If they appear infected (red, swollen, warm to the touch), then I would take him to the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you are going to go outside and it is very cold out, or if you will be going for long walks or on colder surfaces (not snow but ice or cold pavement) then booties are a good idea as they can get frostbite and wounds from cold on their feet. Best of luck with Spike! Have fun with him!

Ideally, Cameron should be seen by your veterinarian. The toe is likely painful and a constant risk of infection. It should be removed if possible. Any bootie should be taken off when indoors. A bandage or sock should be changed whenever it becomes soiled. An e-collar (cone) can be used to prevent licking or chewing.

Poor guy. If the areas are relatively superficial, then you can clean them with Betadine/Iodine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution (2-4% diluted until a robin's egg blue consistency). This will remove any bacteria on the surface. However, since this part of the pet is always touching the ground and getting debris in them, you should consider placing booties (purchased at the local Petco or on Amazon) on Lincoln for 4-7 days until the skin starts to heal back. You may not need to keep these on Lincoln while he is inside the house, but definitely when he goes outside to potty. Alternatively, you can try placing socks or some kind of stocking material on his paws and then wiping them down with the solution when he comes back in. I would not recommend placing anything else over the counter on these areas. The paw pads are normally very forgiving when they just have abrasions on them and not an actual laceration (cut) of the pad, and heal up well in many cases. If the paws are wore down to the point of bleeding or show any signs of infection, then it is best to take him to your veterinarian for additional medication and treatment. I hope that this helps. Best of luck with Lincoln and I hope that his paws heal up well soon! Take care.
