Why does my dog shake and shiver from excitement when I get home?

Hi there! Congratulations on adopting your new friend a few months ago. Shivering in dog can be for a variety of reasons. Some common, but benign reasons would be from nervousness/excitement, dreaming while sleeping, or being cold or frightened. Some other, more serious reasons for shivering, can include ingestion of toxins, low blood sugar, low calcium, or even seizure activity. In some cases, dogs exposed to the canine distemper virus can have muscle tremors as a residual side effect from the virus. Based on Chance's history of being adopted, with a likely unknown history, it may be a good idea to bring him in for an examination by his veterinarian. This way, they can make sure no serious illnesses are suspected. What can be helpful for your veterinarian, since you don't know much about Chance's history, would be to log when these episodes occur, how long they last, and even get a video recording of a few of them. Again, as I mentioned above, shivering can just be for some very unexciting and logical reasons, such as excitement or being cold, but if it is concerning you, and becoming more and more frequent, an examination by his veterinarian would be a great idea! I'm sorry to hear that Charlie isn't feeling well. His behavior certainly doesn't normal for him. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. It is not uncommon for small breed dogs to experience back or neck pain. The pain can be intense. Sign in the dog are usually a reluctance to jump on furniture, refusal to do stairs, shaking and hesitant to move. In worst case scenarios, some dogs was will experience neurologic problems such as weakness or paralysis of the limbs. Charlie will need to see his veterinarian to know if this is what is causing his symptoms verses something else. In the meantime, keep him quiet and encourage him to eat and drink. This is likely just because she was really excited to be playing so I would not be too concerned. If she continues to shake her bottom jaw even when y’all are not playing then I would have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!

Hi there. While it is not abnormal for Charlie to be lethargic and behave differently when everyone leaves-this is a bit much. I would recommend taking him in to your veterinarian in case something else is going on. Pancreatitis, intoxication, and a few other diseases can start with this presentation. Shivering in dogs is often a pain response (can also be nervousness, cold, etc). If these behaviors continue I recommend taking him in as soon as you can to try to prevent it from getting worse. This is all very normal excited behavior. She just loves you and is trying to tell you. It is also very normal for dogs to pee when they get excited to se their owners. Give her a big hug and enjoy all the love she is giving you!

That does sound a bit like nerves, especially if it is only happening when you pick him up a certain way and he doesn't have any other symptoms. I would try to pick him up in a way that is more comfortable with him, as well as try to get him more used to be handled. This can be done by offering a favorite treat every time you handle him -- such as when you pick him up, touch his paws, face, etc. Praising and rewarding will help him to associate it with good things and can make handling and picking him up a bit easier in the future as well. If the behavior continues, worsens, or other symptoms appear, it is always a good idea to have your vet take a look as well to rule out any health or pain issues that could be causing it.
