My dog is shaking and has red fluid near his bum. What should I do?

Poor guy. He either has really loose stool or an anal gland issues. The anal glands are located inside the rectum and can get infected or even rupture, causing leakage of fluid that is very strong and smelly. I would definitely recommend taking him to your vet on tomorrow if possible to get this looked at. Either condition is very treatable through your vet with medications (i.e. antibiotics). For now, it is best to just wipe the area gently with a wet cloth or paper towel. If the area appears to be irriated, you can also apply a cold compress on the area if he will allow it, for 2-5 mins to help soothe the area. There may be a mild to moderate swelling possibly due to anal glands impaction/inflammation, which may be discharging excess of fluid. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Anal gland expression may be needed. From the photo, Clyde’s anus looks irritated but the lighting may be off. It’s very concerning that he won’t stand up. It could indicate that he is in pain or that he had an injury to his back. This is unusual for a very active dog and I recommend to have him examined today. Most serious conditions have a better prognosis if they are diagnosed and treated early. If he is in pain, the veterinarian can provide medication to make him feel better. The irritated anus could be unrelated to the reason he will not stand up. Irritation can be related to allergies, anal gland problems or trauma. I recommend to play it safe and have him examined. He could be having a problem with his anal gland and have an infection and/or need the glands expressed. If the problem continues than have your vet examine him to determine the cause. Your vet can express his glands, if needed.

It sounds as Colby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

If the blood and mucous is coming from his anal gland, he may have an infected anal gland. If that is the case, he may need an infusion or oral antibiotics to resolve it. Ouch, poor Dudley! It could be he has growth on his anus or his anal sacs could be impacted and infected. Yes, definitely take him into a vet before his owner comes home. The vet can diagnose what is causing this swelling and bleeding, and can treat him for it. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
