My dog is shaking with belly lumps. What to do before the vet?

I'm so sorry your pet is so ill. It sounds like Holly may have an infection. Bacterial infection causes pet to shake and be uncomfortable, they are also lethargic not eating and have a fever. You can certainly check her rectal temperature and if it is above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, then an infection is likely and she needs to see a vet. I see she isn't spayed so it is very likely she has an infection of her uterus (pyometra) which can happen at any time and can be life threatening if not treated quickly. Oh my. Poor girl. Her belly is seriously distended which could be caused by congestive heart failure, a mass, or a condition called pyometra (infected uterus seen in nonspayed female dogs). I highly recommend taking Lala to your local vet right away to have her checked out. The vet will want to do a proper exam and then next would be radiographs (x-rays) of her belly and bloodwork to pinpoint the underyling problem. Poor guy. I would be cautious here and take him in to your local vet right away if this has been going on for more than 30 mins-1 hr or if he is lethargic. A number of things could be going on here such as a toxin ingestion, severe stomach upset episodes or an underlying disease such as Addison's disease. Check his gum color immediately and if you notice pale gums then he should be seen right away as well. I do hope that this is just a stomach upset and that he starts to improve over the next hour. If he does seem to calm down, then you should definitely fast him for the next 12 hrs (water only), then you should feed him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice for the next few days to help settle his stomach. Yes, please take her in right away. This sounds like she is in a lot of pain. Dogs pant a lot and tremble when they are in pain. Since she’s not spayed she could have a uterine infection that can become life threatening, or many small dogs get intervertebral disc disease which can cause the symptoms you are seeing. They will need to do an exam and possibly lab tests or X-rays to get a diagnosis, then they can give pain medication and the appropriate treatment. It sounds very suspicious of a uterine infection, she might need an urgent surgery, if she is in severe pain and very lethargic you should probably not wait until tomorrow. If she is stable just keep her still and don't touch the belly area, that is all that you can do.

As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.
