My dog has seizures and White Tremor Syndrome. Can she recover?

I would need to ask a bunch more questions and would be happy to do a consultation if you’d like but let me give you a few ideas. 1) be sure it’s not heart- Fainting spells can look a lot like seizures. Consider a cardiology consult to make sure it’s not that. They’ll do an EKG and ultrasound of the heart to make sure nothing is amiss. 2) weird fungal diseases- I’m from Arizona, land of valley fever - a fungal disease that can - and often does- cause seizures. Other fungi like Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis can do similar things. If Bella has traveled out of Texas- even for just a day or two- these are considerations. 3) Bella is simply an atypical epileptic and needs more/different medication. Just like in people, it can sometimes take some time to find the right combination of drugs to get the seizures controlled. 4) weird drug interactions- double check especially about any anti-anxiety or behavior modification medications and pain medications. 5) hypothyroidism, tick fever, other weird stuff. If you’ve done an MRI, you may have already consulted with a neurologist. If not? That would be the next step along with the cardiologist visit. Best of luck to you and Bella!

I'm so sorry to hear that Lilly has developed seizures. Seizures in dogs can be fatal if not treated. There are a huge number of newer anti-convulsant drugs that are much safer than some of the older ones (and even a new diet). I always tell people that old age is not a disease. Seizures and their side effects are much more likely to kill Lilly than any of the medications that your vet might prescribe. I think it is worth having your vet examine her and discuss the treatment options. Hopefully your vet can put your parents' minds at ease about the medication and make Lilly feel better. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are no herbs or supplements that are known to be helpful for seizures unfortunately. Also, it is not recommended generally to combined supplements with the regular anti-seizure medications as some of these can interact with the medications. Good news is that usually dogs become more and more tolerant of the anti-seizure medications and become less and less groggy on them as the time goes on. Good luck and have a great day!

Oh poor baby. From the very little I know about her situation, I think she probably needs to be hospitalized full time and receive IV medications to try to stop the seizures or possible be put under anesthesia to allow her brain to heal a bit. It sounds like her prognosis is guarded at this point and she may not make it. There isn't anything you can do at home. Thank you for trying to take care of her and I hope she pulls through, but if she doesn't, then know you've done everything possible for her.

Poor Tails. Understandibly you have been researching the possible causes of Tail's condition, however, as a lay person you need to be careful about what you read. Border collie collapse syndrome is a disease specifc to border collies, and Tails is a sheltie not a collie. Moreover, seizuring is very different to collapsing. If you know he is seizuring as opposed to collapsing then the most likely reason in his case is idiopathic epilepsy. It is common enough in Shelties and he is around the right age for normal onset. Seizuring can have a large oal on a dog and make their moid change afterwards and effect their muscles. I would give the phenobarbitol a chance to work, it does take a while to load in the system. If you have reason to believe that Tails is not actuallly seizuring but is collapsing I would discuss this with your vet as it is caused by different conditions entirely such as heart, lung or blood issues.

I'm so sorry Pippi is dealing with this. Unfortunately for a small dog, heartworms can be life threatening, so I would certainly try to find a heartworm preventative medication that will work for her. I generally recommend Interceptor or Sentinel for seizure dogs because the medication does not cross the blood-brain barrier and cannot cause seizures. Vaccinations are a little trickier because the answer depends on Pippi's lifestyle and her risks of being exposed to different diseases. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!
