Why is my dog still scratching with wounds after flea treatment?

Hello. It is very possible that Jackson can itch after being treated for the fleas. Just think how long a mosquito bite itches us after a bite. It is a bit of a delayed reaction to the bite itself & the saliva injected into the skin to allow the insect to feed. Of course, he could be itching for other reasons & other allergies. I always recommend putting itching dogs, especially those with dry skin, on a good Omega 3 fish oil. If he continues to scratch, he may need to be on an allergy medication such as Apoquel or Cytopoint, but give him a few days to see if this is a delayed reaction. Poor Jackson. From your description, I would guess that Jackson likely has a superficial infection and needs antibiotics or antifungals to get the itching under control. He may also need steroids or an anti-inflammatory and/or anti-itch medication. You've tried the right home remedies, but since that's not cutting it, I would recommend a vet ASAP. They will sample the surface of his skin to see if there is bacteria or yeast there, and then treat the infection. It's also worthwhile to talk with the vet about the underlying cause of this itching. It could be allergies (but new allergies in a 11 year old would be odd) or an endocrine disorder disrupting the normal functioning of the skin, or other issues.

I recommend you get him checked by your vet - it is likely the damaged skin has become infected and very painful, hence the biting and snapping towards the area. It is likely he will need antibacterial and antifungal washes and possibly antiinflammatory medication to allow the skin to heal. An omega fatty acid supplement and rigorous flea prevention (including household flea spray to kill the eggs and larvae) are also recommended

This looks like an infected skin wound. It is possible that the wound was due to some sort of trauma or it could be because Noah was scratching. Either way, Noah will need oral antibiotics in order for this wound to heal. It is unlikely that any topical treatment alone will help.

When you have a heavy flea infestation, you also have to disinfect the environment as well. Wash theirs bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Dogs who have heavy flea infestations can also develop flea allergies, which would lead them to continue to be itchy and may affect the fur growing back. I would take them both back into the vet, and the vet can discuss if they do have flea allergies and how to treat them. Tonight, give them baths in Epsom salts or oatmeal, as it may help temporarily with the itching. Tomorrow, I'd take them into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Sounds like Jack has skin allergies or what we refer to as atopy in dogs. As far as the licking and scooting, he may have an anal sac infection or inflammation. You need to have your veterinarian check his anal glands and discuss referral to a veterinary dermatologist for intradermal skin testing. The skin test determines exactly what Jack is allergic to and allows your veterinarian to formulate a vaccine that can treat him long term,. The goal here is to prevent chronic or recurring skin infections.

You have to treat the environment as well, as fleas don't live on the dog, they live in the home. If you haven't treated your home, that could be why Kobi is still scratching.
