My dog scratches constantly, has red skin & dandruff. What to do?

If you haven't yet had him seen by a vet, ideally I would recommend that you have him evaluated. He may have a secondary bacterial infection that needs to be cleared up with antibiotics, and he may benefit from prescription medications such as Apoquel which can make a big difference for these guys! You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. Each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the the rash. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching, if your dog is itching.

Poor Shorty! He does sound quite uncomfortable. You can try bathing him in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo, or using a topical hydrocortisone spray labeled for dogs - you should be able to find this at most pet stores. These things may help to soothe his skin and help relieve the itching until he can see a vet. He will probably need prescription medication including an antibiotic and a short-term steroid like prednisone to treat the problem effectively, so I would definitely recommend having him seen by a vet on Monday if at all possible.

It is definitely time to take him for assessment and treatment right away. The severe itch is causing him to damage the skin which can lead to infection and scarring in addition to the itchy allergy and makes management much more complicated

Typically, itchy red skin with hair loss is caused by either fleas, mites (mange), ringworm ( actually a fungus) or allergies. For me, the most common one of these is allergies. Dogs can have allergies to ingredients in their food or to things in the environment. They need to be seen by a vet who can rule out the other causes I mentioned, and then take the appropriate course of treatment. Some dogs will improve greatly on a hypoallergenic diet, others need immunosuppressive drugs. Often these guys have secondary bacterial infections that require antibiotics. I'd recommend an appointment With Lylas vet ASAP to get this sorted out, and get her some medications to help her feel better.

The skin is unhealthy for some reason. This is usually caused by some irritation of the skin. The skin is most commonly irritated from allergies, fleas, mites, or inappropriate bathing. The irritation can then cause the skin to get infected with yeast and bacteria. The best thing you can do now is give a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (you can find this at the pet store). Follow the shampoo with an oatmeal or aloe conditioner labeled for dogs. Repeat the bath every other day for two weeks. If that's helping, then repeat the bath every week for a month. If all is good after that, then she should be OK to have a once monthly bath with normal dog shampoo. If the bath is not helping, or she's getting worse, then she needs to go to the vet. The vet will be able to determine if something else is wrong and if further treatment is needed.

Poor Lily. This looks like it could be an allergy, but without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. Unfortunately you cannot treat this yourself, she needs to see a vet to have this diagnosed so it can be treated correctly.
