Why does my dog rub or shake their nose after sniffing a bug?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! It sounds as though Coco may have an allergy. The sneezing and facial rubbing can be symptoms of an allergy. You can try an antihistamine to see if it helps. Read the link below: https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/ Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Snikcers should be fine. I would be more worried if he came in contact with an area that was sprayed. We can't even be sure that this particular bug even contacted the chemical. To be safe you can always rinse his mouth out well with water and wash his face. Have a great day!

Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. You should have your veterinarian check this out as the right diagnosis will led to the correct treatment ( if anything is necessary ), especially if it is getting worse. Hope all is well & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hello. A localized swelling like this in a relatively young dog is probably just some kind of allergic reaction. I agree with you that it is probably from an insect sting or bite. If Buddy will allow it, you can apply a cool compress or an ice cube wrapped in a wash cloth for as long as he will tolerate it. If it is not significantly down by tomorrow, you may want your vet to take a look, but there does not seem to be anything very worrisome about this. Just watch for any changes over the rest of the evening. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Bruce doesn't do this with any other chew toy or bone then I would throw it away. If he rubs his face after licking or chewing on it, he may be wiping the drool off his lips and face. That isn't abnormal. Rubbing his face from just sniffing it isn't normal unless you think he is trying to bury it. I wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bleu maybe rubbing his face on his treats due to excitement, to mark his scent on the food, in the wild dogs do this to tell others in their pack where the food is, it could be a form of resource guarding or simply because he just is so happy and loves treats! I wouldn’t try to read in to it too much! Hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
