Apartment dog won't potty outside, tears pads, pees inside. Help!

She may have been trained to potty inside, you can try leaving out potty pads for her to go inside. She may also not be used to having to go potty in a busy, loud, or concrete-filled environment. Give her more time. Keep treats in your pocket and take her out often. Use a command like "go potty" and repeat it when you first get outside. When she does go outside, give her treats and LOTS of praise (people should be thinking you are a wackadoo!). Eventually she will figure out that going outside is a good thing that makes you very happy.

Well we can't have your house smelling like a shelter! These can be really tough. It is possible to still house train Pickles, but you are going to have to be very dedicated to make it work. As long as the carpet smells of urine, Pickles will try to pee inside. So it you have carpet, you might need to rip out the carpet, and the pad underneath to get rid of the odor. I would start by keeping her in a small crate when she is unsupervised. Big enough that she can stand and turn around, but small enough that if she pees, she can't get away from the pee. When you are home, she can be with you, but on a leash. Every 2-3 hours you will take her outside and give her opportunity. If she normally goes to the bathroom in the same area in the house, then put up gates or close doors or place something over the area so she cannot get to it. If she is on a leash, this is easier. If she is sleeping quietly or playing, you don't have to worry, but as soon as she gets up or stops playing, immediately take her outside. You have to start completely over like she was 8 weeks old. Take treats with you every time you go outside. When she finally goes outside, make a BIG deal about it. Praise her, give her treats and affection. Hang in there, and be diligent. The only way it will work is if you stick with it. Good luck!

Poor Lillian. Make every effort to get her outside to potty. Also work on making her more comfortable. It's a big change for her. Once she is comfortable in the house, you can begin trying to get her comfortable outside. It's possible something has scared her in the past and now she has developed a negative association. You may try to counteract this by creating a positive association. Begin by having a high value treat or toy. Start playing/a training session inside the house by the door way. Do this for a few days. Once Lillian seems comfortable playing by the door way, toss the toy or treat outside and allow her to retrieve it and come back inside. Do this until Lillian is comfortable. Then move outside by the doorway way. Gradually move further and further away from the door way. Then begin gradually decreasing the play time and just hanging outside with her. Try not to leave her outside unattended until she seems comfortable. I hope this helps.

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. Potty training issues like this can be very frustrating! The key is that you have to be very diligent, and more stubborn than your dog. Unfortunately, when it comes to potty training, going out 3 times a day isn't enough. If there is a way you can take her out more frequently, I would recommend it. Because if she doesn't go when you take her out, but she doesn't have access for another 6 or 8 hours, she is unlikely to hold it that long. You also need to make sure there is nowhere for Cardi to pee inside. This means she either needs to be picked up and carried inside (past where she normally pees), and stay on leash at your side at all times, or in a crate when unsupervised. The crate should be small enough that she can't get away from a pee spot, but big enough that she can stand and turn around. The other big thing is to get rid of the odor of urine inside. This means having the carpets cleaned, and in some cases rip up the carpet and pad underneath. As long as she smells the urine, she will recognize the area as an appropriate place to pee. Once a dog is trained to go inside, it can be a tough process to get them to go outside. The more you can give her opportunity to go outside the better. It might be a process best started over a weekend or a day you can be home. You have to give her frequent chances to do the right thing. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It will take time to teach an older dog to go indoors. I would take the pad outside and put it on the ground. See if he will use it outside. If he poops and pees on it, bring it indoors and leave it there soiled for a little bit. So he can see it and smell the elimination. Use praise and treats when he uses the pad outdoors and then when he uses it indoors. Start with the pads close to the door to the outside and then gradually move it to your desired location. Use whatever phrase you use to encourage him to go "do your business," etc. Use a leash to let him sniff the pad. It will take tome to retrain him. Dogs like their routines. Be patient and positive! If Jewel is urinating in the house I would recommend bringing her into a veterinarian and have them check a urine sample on her. She may have a urinary tract infection. If she is defecating in the house and it is normal this can be behavioral and I would consider checking a stool sample and crating her until she goes outside again. If it is diarrhea then I would recommend checking a stool sample, putting her on a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and if it doesn't resolve discussed probiotics and medication with your veterinarian.
