My dog won't go to the bathroom in the rain. Should I be concerned?

Maybe he does not want to go out in bad weather. I would actually make him go out with you on a leash as he may have just figured out that he can go inside.... If he shows any other signs of discomfort, vomiting, not eating properly or being lethargic, I would have him examined by your vet.

Hello there! Thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Perhaps there is something that has recently frightened her out in the yard or garden. There is also the possibility she is having pain while urinating and/or defecating and therefore may be associating the area she goes wee and poo with the pain she may be experiencing. I think the best thing to do in this situation is encourage to go out (perhaps join or accompany her) or take her for a walkie to see if she goes then. If not and you are still concerned, especially if she hasn't passed urine or stool soon, then I would recommend you see your veterinarian for an exam. A urinary tract infection can cause pain during urination and constipation can cause pain during defecation. I would want to be sure there is nothing more serious going on if this behavior continues. I would not be overly concerned about this just yet. Dogs can hold it for a pretty long period of time. It is not great for them to do so but it should not be harmful at this stage. Are you sure she hasn't gone somewhere in the house? If you are taking her out on a leash, she may not be used to going on a leash - this happens a lot. So you may have to have her off leash. Don't make too much of a big deal when you take her out. Only say whatever word you want to cue her to use the bathroom like "go potty". Do not say or do anything else. Once she goes give her a good treat of something she likes. If you don't have an off leash area then I suggest you do the same as above just on leash instead of off. Try to take her to a spot where other dogs have gone as this usually stimulates them to go. Urination is most important. If she goes 24 hours without urinating you need to get her to a vet. It may be days before she defecates and that is not as concerning. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Congrats on your new dog, Harley is so cute! Moving into a new home is stressful, and it will take time for her to adjust. I wouldn't be worried just yet she hasn't gone to the bathroom. Just keep trying and offering her water. Since she is an otherwise healthy dog I think she will go eventually. Good luck!

Poor girl! One of the most common culprits for this issue is a urinary tract infection. Many times, dogs are reluctant to urinate when it's painful, so they either try to hold it, have accidents in the house when they can't hold it, or they dribble and urinate more frequently. Pain and discomfort associated with urinary issues can commonly cause them to eat less or skip meals. Likewise, kidney infections, bladder stones, and other issues, can cause similar problems. At this point, as long as Molly is able to pass urine and is still acting normally, I think you can wait to see you vet first thing tomorrow. If she's unable to urinate, lethargic, or vomiting, I think you should take her to an ER vet today. A vet will need to collect a urine sample, so be sure not to let her urinate on her way into her appointment! Unfortunately, there really isn't anything else that you can do at home at this point aside from taking her outside frequently and offering plenty of fresh water. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hello. Not urinating for a day is a little bit more worrisome than not having a bowel movement, but if he eating & drinking, I am not too concerned. Are you having a bad weather in your area? This can certainly keep a pet from its normal elimination schedule. If Slinky is doing well otherwise, then just give him another day.
