Why is my dog's scrotum red with a penis bump and painful to lie down?

I am very sorry that Joey’s scrotum is red. Without a picture it is difficult to know what the problem may be, but I will offer you some general advice to help make him more comfortable. Apply a cool compress to the area for a few minutes at a time over the next few days Place an e-collar on Joey so he does not bite or chew at the area and cause it to become infected or inflamed Bathing the area with warm water and leaving open to dry out If you notice pain, enlargement of the testicles or scrotum sac, change in colour , especially deepening red, blue or purple, discharge or bleeding I would take Joey to the veterinarian immediately. There could be a torsion or twist in the testicles causing the redness or swelling. This is a very painful condition and a medical emergency. If the redness does not go down in the next few hours I would also advice taking Joey to the vet for an examination. It could be skin infection, skin parasite or an issue with a structure within the testicles or scrotum. The vet will be able to diagnose and make a treatment plan with you. Chico could have a urethral prolapse, an infection or some type of trauma to that area. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Without treatment that tissue could become dead/necrotic, he could have trouble urinating which leads to other issues like kidney failure as well as long term damage like scarring. Do not give him any human medications as it can be toxic to dogs. Keep him from licking at the area and remove and discharge with a warm, moist, clean cloth.

Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like a bacterial infection of the skin. Around the penis is a common area to get skin infections due to the proximity to the ground. I would suggest bathing the area with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo. If Duke's skin does not improve within 1-2 days, I would bring him to the vet, as he may need something stronger such as oral antibiotics. In the meantime, you may need to put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from licking and further traumatizing the skin. I hope this helps, and that Duke feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet. Poor Luke! I worry he has some edema (swelling) and possibly an infection in that area. If he isn’t overweight and he doesn’t normal have this “pouch” around his prepuce then I would try to get him seen by a vet. The vet will be able to ensure his penis looks okay and there is no loss of circulation and see if he needs some anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to help it go down. I hope this helps!

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

It's possible something may have irritated Barley's penis, causing the blister you are seeing. It is best to keep the area clean and dry and prevent him and other dogs from licking or chewing at the spot. If it doesn't clear up in a day or so, becomes bothersome, or affects his ability to urinate, it is best to have a vet take a look to see if there is a possible infection or other issue causing it.
