My Labrador has a red lump on his face that turned white. What is it?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks like a possible bug bite based on how quickly this came about, and also the color and area that it is located. If it doesn't seem to bother Gracie, then I would recommend monitoring it for now to see if this resolves on its own within the next few days. You can apply a cold compress on the area (if needed) for 5-10 minutes to help with some of the swelling, and a very thin layer of Neosporin once every 12 hrs as needed; however, this is likely to resolve on its own as long as Gracie doesn't bother it and it doesn't spread. If the bump does appear to get worse over the next 24-48 hrs, then its best to get Gracie seen by your vet for stronger medication to get this to resolve. There is a slight chance that this is an infected pocket (abscess) that will require a short course of antibiotics and treatment to get this to heal well. The photos are a bit grainy but I think what I am seeing is a lump that looks like a histiocytoma. It usually will go away on it's own within a few weeks to months. I suggest you leave it alone. It could be a cyst, papilloma, histiocytoma, or a pustule. You could have her examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to diagnose and then determine if treatment is needed Papillomas and histiocytomas are common in young dogs and usually resolve with no treatment.

I would recommend taking Alfie to the vet to have the lump looked at. A wart can become infection however warts are not very common in younger dogs. It is possible Alfie has a skin infection, cyst, non cancerous growth or even an allergic reaction. You can try an over the counter anti histamine but a vet visit would be the best option

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! It is difficult to say what the growth you are seeing is since there are no pictures. Seeing that Carl is quite a young dog, I would suspect what you are seeing is benign. Many times in dogs this young when we see a mass it is likely a papilloma secondary to exposure to the papilloma virus or a histiocytoma. Both of these typically resolve on their own and will occasionally need surgical intervention for removal. If the mass is not going away on its own or is multiplying in number, I would have this examined by a veterinarian and have further testing performed to help further determine what this could be so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended. Tucker likely has a localized infection or perhaps a skin tumor. The good news is that its most likely benign. Rarely, young dogs can get a malignant tumor called a mast cell tumor so I would recommend to have the area examined by a veterinarian to be sure. The doctor may recommend to take a small sample of cells to make sure its nothing to be concerned about.
