My dog has a red line near her vulva and anus. Why is she uncomfortable?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This is not normal for a heat cycle. The perivulvar area looks red and inflamed which is most likely from the diaper. The diaper is keeping too much heat and moisture in/around the vulva. You may be keeping the diaper on for too many hours. If you continue with the diaper this area will likely get infected. You will need to leave the diaper off and you can treat the affected area with this: ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/3-oz-3-fl-oz-hot-spot-antimicr-2877113 ) If she is bleeding a lot you will need to keep her in a kennel, bathroom or kitchen area so she does not track blood around your house. Based on the photo and the symptoms you are describing I would suspect that this redness is secondary to some mild irritation or a very mild bacterial infection. If she is otherwise acting ok I would recommend continuing to monitor this area. If at any point Goldie begins licking or you notice a colored/odorous discharge I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can evaluate this area and perform other diagnostics such as an impression smear or culture of the area. The area around the nipple appears to be a little red and irritated. If Bindi is licking the area it may be causing her some discomfort. It looks like your pet has a case of vaginitis, inflammation of the vagina, or she has an ongoing discharge, possibly due to an infection in the cervix or uterus. She may need antibiotics, especially if she is off her appetite, drinking an excesssive amount of water &/ or peeing a lot, or seems unhappy or lethargic. Otherwise, if she seems normal, give her a few days to see if things begin to clear up. You can use warm water, or a gentle facial wipe to keep the area clean, & monitor for any further changes. Hopefully, all will be normal soon. Take care.

Inflammation in that area can make it look red. Dogs can get vaginitis, infections, tumors or it can get inflamed if she has been licking at it more than normal. Pay close attention to her urination habits as a UTI can cause pain which can cause increased licking. If the redness does not go away after a few days, if she seems uncomfortable or itchy, or if you see a change her urination, have her seen by her veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely saliva staining. Often times licking usually means itchiness which in turn could potentially be due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

If Mama has a vaginal discharge and she is not spayed she may have a uterine infection or what we refer to as a pyometra. Typically, we recommend surgery for these cases but they can be treated medically. The problem with medical therapy is that most reoccur. You may try reaching out to a low cost spay, neuter shelter. The red line is probably not related.
