My 6-month dachshund has a red eye after a fight. What to do?

Layla may have an eye infection, she may have come into contact with something that irritated her eyes, she may have rubbed and made her eyes sore, whatever the cause, Layla needs to see your vet to get this diagnosed and treated. Left alone, she may rub her face and eyes to the point that she damages the eye itself. Your vet will check for ulcers on her cornea, possibly her tear production and examine the eyes very closely in order to determine what may be the cause and how best to treat it.

Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. I can see that the sclera (white part of the eye) does look a little red in your last picture. This could be from trauma but can also be seen with conjunctivitis or even a corneal ulcer. Given Mitzer's breed I would recommend seeing a vet to make sure the cornea does not appear affected. They can also look at the lens and the back of the eye to make sure there is nothing abnormal that would cause a difference in the reflection from the back of the eye.

Poor Fiona! Monitor the eye twice daily. If it gets redder, you see discharge coming from it, she's rubbing at her eye, or the eye appears cloudy in appearance, you need to take her into a vet immediately. This usually happens with trauma to the eye or if the dog has been choked. If it is just a burst blood vessel, it should resolve with time, like a bruise. If there is any swelling, squinting, cloudiness of the clear part of the eye or discharge, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure there is not something more serious that requires treatment.

The pupil can constrict with bleeding or inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye, blunt trauma, or a scratch to the surface of the eye. If you see blood, if your dog is squinting or seems painful, or if there is discharge from the eye I’d recommend traveling to see an emergency vet if at all possible since some conditions could compromise vision if left untreated. Otherwise I think you could monitor her for a day but if the pupil does not return to normal within 24 hours I’d recommend seeing a vet.
