What's this red, dry, white-edged rash on my dog's legs and shoulder?

It looks like Murphy has collarettes that are typical of pyoderma, a fairly common bacteria skin infection. I recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination. If it is confirmed to be bacterial, your vet will likely prescribe an antibiotic such as Simplicef along with a probiotic to prevent diarrhea from the antibiotic course, +/- a medicated shampoo such as Malaseb every other day for two weeks. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly allergies. The alopecic lesions are calluses which occur due to pressure on the bone ends. This can improve by adding more padding where she normally rests on. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi and thanks for your request. These are epidermal collarettes.; they are 'footprints' of a vesicular or pustular lesion. They are therefore a common lesion type in canine pyoderma, which is a type of superficial skin infection. An allergy could be present, but the signs are solely compatible with an infection. Disinfection can be provided with hibiscrub diluted with water 1:10 twice daily. Make sure to rinse off the solution and leave the skin dry. The signs should resolve in the next 4-5 days, if not a check up will be needed.

The discoloration is from chronic licking, and saliva contains enzymes in it that cause the fur to change color. The areas she has been licking are typically areas that flare up in cases of allergies - these can be to something in the environment such as mold or dust, or certain proteins in food. While the itching is not comfortable, the chronic clicking causes destruction of the skin barrier and this predisposes Rillie to bacterial and/or fungal skin infections. That appears to be an epidermal collarette. Typically that lesion appears secondary to a skin infection either from allergies or a break in the skin barrier. It can easily spread if untreated. Your vet can examine Rocky to find the reason it started to clear the infection. They make medicated shampoos that will help also.

It looks like Pokki has a superficial infection on the skin of her neck. If she frequently wears a collar, this area can be prone to infection if the collar is not kept clean and dry. Rarely, pets can be allergic to the nylon material but this is very uncommon. It's generally more related to the collar being dirty/oily or getting wet. Sometimes parasites can also cause this type of rash as well. At home you can try washing the area with an antibacterial hand soap and rinse well. You can then apply a dab of coconut oil to the reddened bumps. Rub it in well. If this does not help within a week, make an appointment with your vet. That being said, if you wish to go ahead and have her seen, the doctor will provide medications that will clear it up faster. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to post any additional questions!
