What is this recurring lump on my dog's butt? Should I worry?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a skin growth. I don't think it is a tick or any other skin parasite. Ticks feed on dogs for 3-4 days and then fall off. If this lump has been there for a few months it cannot be a tick or any other bug. Skin growths like this are common in older dogs. They are usually benign and not dangerous, but please show it to your vet the next time you take Lily in for an appointment.

This does seem rather small in size and could very well be an insect bite. Since it isn't really bothering him, I would recommend monitoring this for now to see if this will spontaneously resolve If it is still present after 2 weeks or worsens at any time, then its best to get your vet to take a look at this on physical exam. Based on the pictures, it does not look like a tick. It looks like a skin mass. Have your vet take a look at him to determine exactly what it is. Your vet may want to aspirate or biopsy to diagnose.

This may be a cyst or a tumor, or a pimple (little abscess). You should have it examined by your veterinarian as tumors should be removed ASAP, especially if they are of a black color. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. Your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning. You can also watch it for a few days and see whether it goes away again. I don't think it is anything terribly worrisome.

This is concerning. Looks necrotic (like dying tissue). I would be worried about some type of cancer or an infected cyst since it has been there so long with no resolution. If it was a simple abscess or insect bite it would have healed by now. A year is a long time.... I suggest you go ahead with the course of antibiotics your vet gave you and if no resolution I suggest you get a biopsy done of that tissue.

Hello. I am sorry that Niko has this lump. This could be something called a sebaceous cysts, could be a scar, could be a wart, or could be something more scary like a tumor. Without removing it and sending for histopathology you can't know for sure, but if it isn't growing, bleeding, or causing any issues you can also just keep an eye on it and have it seen if any changes occur. That looks like a lump on Gurgi, and it could be a cyst, abscess, lipoma, benign tumor, or malignant tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.
