How long does dog razor burn take to heal and hair to grow back?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Unfortunately, razor burn is a common occurrence with shaving dog hair. Sometimes clippers become too hot or the blades cut the skin. This is nothing to worry about as it will heal on its own. You can use Sentry Wound Ointment to apply to the razor burn but not to the incision site. I would not recommend placing any creams over the neuter incision. As for the heartworm disease, there are no known natural worm killing supplements that I would recommend. You can try the "slow kill" method by administering monthly heartworm preventative and see if that works. Heartworm prevention such as Heartgard is what I typically recommend. This presentation could be due to a localized trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths.Oxide zinc cream (sudocream) can be applied when the skin is completely dry. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Skin infections can vary in healing times based upon how long the infection is present, how deep in the skin the bacteria have penetrated and if there are any underlying allergies. Typically treatment for skin issues is 10 days - 6 weeks. If there are underlying skin issues (or even endocrine gland issues) then the condition will become reoccurring and difficult to clear. For general purpose, oatmeal types shampoos tend to do well for most dogs as it generally doesn't overly dry the skin. I would recommend to have an appointment with a local vet to examine Gunner's skin and see if they feel additional treatment or medicated shampoo is needed. Aside from allergies and endocrine disorders, parasites and fungus can also cause hair loss. I hope this has answered your question. Take care!

The fur will eventually regrow. It will not be as soft as the original coat and it may grow in darker. The redness and peeling may indicate infection due to irritation or licking after the clipping. Consider an exam with your veterinarian in case Jasper needs systemic antibiotics and/or topical treatment. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing until the hair has grown in. A fish oil supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, can be added to the diet to promote healthy skin and coat. If he spends time outdoors, consider a small tee shirt to protect his skin from sunburn.

Poor Rhu! You can try a little coconut oil in that area to help soothe it. If it is ulcerated, you may also try a little Neosporin ointment. I would also put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking that area. Licking will only may the area worse. If the area isn't healing, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if she needs some oral antibiotics or stronger medicines. It could take 2-6 weeks for the area to regrow depending on how long it takes the skin to heal. Very rarely will these types of wounds scar. If it scars, the hair will not grow back. Hi and thanks for posting! If the infection on his tail is healing or is close to fully healed, it may take 2-4 weeks for the hair to grow back in that area. Sometimes, however if the infection is severe enough and leaves scar tissue in the area, the hair may not grow back fully. I hope this helps and best of luck!

It might take a long time, don't worry but, if there are not even tiny hair or if it is more than 6 weeks without improvements, consider to bring Music back to your local vet for a check up. In rare cases metabolic diseases (i.e. thyroid disfunction) can increase the length of time necessary for the hair regrowth and a blood test might be necessary to diagnose it. In the meantime make sure Music does not lick the affected area and add to her diet some omega 3/6 that can be find at your local pet shop.
