Dog stitches removed, raw spot. Should I be concerned about e-collar?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 11 months and 13 days old | 12 lbs

Charlie’s stitches were removed yesterday and there seems to be a “raw” area in the middle that is red. The vet tech said it was normal and to leave the e-collar on for another day. It doesn’t seem to improve. How long should I leave the e-collar on and should I be concerned?

I see what you mean about that area. I would leave the cone on for another 24 hours and if it still looks this way after that time, then I would be concerned and have him seen by his vet. I hope this helps.

As long as he isn't trying to lick at it, then its fine to leave the cone off. Since there is a small scab still there, it may itch a bit or be irritating until that scab falls off, so if he's licking at it, leave the cone on until the scab is gone. However its very reasonable to try to go without the cone at this point.
