My dog's rabies shot lump returned. Should I take her to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Belle is SOOO cute! I have had a lump form at the site of the Rabies vaccine in some of my patients as well. It is a local pyogranulomatous reaction that is non-painful. It is harmless and will go away. It can take a month or more in some animals. You do not need to do anything expect monitor it. If she vomited 6 times last night than you need to call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to see your dog again today for a recheck. She might need subcutaneous fluids again and/or an anti-vomiting medications. Hope our dog feels better soon!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The small lump may be a normal reaction to the vaccine causing a small amount t of scar tissue to form and will likely go away. However, it may also be unrelated and caused by a bug bite or skin infection. As for Tippy’s diarrhea, it is very unlikely that it was related to the vaccines. I recommend having her seen by a vet before she is boarded to rule out intestinal parasites or viral infections that are contagious to other dogs. Also, the stress of being boarded may make her symptoms worse, and the kennel staff may have to take her to the vet with your permission while you are away. We are not in a position to prescribe medication on a public forum. With the lump in the throat and severe fever he really shuold be seen by a vet - I would be afraid he has an abscess which needs draining in order to prevent it from restricting his breathing. I would also recommend intravenous antibiotics at this stage in order to speed recovery. Contact your vets office to discuss the case - they may be happy to prescribe a temporary dosage until he can be assessed.

Hello and thank you very much for your question. What you were most likely experiencing is an injection site reaction. D’s can sometimes go away within 24 to 48 hours for these can stay for months. Sometimes these reactions can also be painful and elicit other immune responses such as difficulty breathing, etc. My best advice is to contact the veterinary clinic that administered the injections and tell them what you are experiencing. What most likely will happen is that they may want to re-examine your animal and possibly give you some topical or oral or injectable medication to offset the inflammation. Generally, these appointments do not cost anything and be makers of the vaccine take care of the costs associated. But this all depends on the veterinarian and the clinic involved. So I Urge you to call the veterinary clinic and schedule an appointment as soon as possible to get this lump checked out. We really appreciate you using our service. I hope I have helped.

You should give the antibiotics a couple days to work, i am hoping that by Sunday you will start seeing some improvement. if by Monday it is not getting better take him back to the vet, it might need to be opened surgically in order to drain the fluids that are accumulating on that spot.

Poor Ruby! I would make sure the vet knows that she recently has suspected lymes disease to ensure she is on the proper medicine. I would also talk to your vet about running a lyme titer to see if she has an active infection. If not, she may need to be on a different antibiotic to treat other possible diagnoses.
