Why is my dog quiet and sad after a puppy left? Does he miss him?

I am very sorry you lost your dog. Just as people, dog can and do get sad when their companions die. It is quite likely that Spike is not eating because he misses your other dog. And this can take quite a while. I suggest you take him for a lot of walks, give him lots of TLC and offer him his favorite food, maybe even warmed up. If he does not start eating after a few days you should take him to a vet who, after making sure there is no physical problem, can give him some medication to make him hungry, or feel less sad.

I am sorry to hear that it seems Lucas is not himself. It is most likely that he is only experiencing an adjustment period following your separation and now return. I would advise the following to try and help him feel more secure and therefore help him return to being himself; Extra walks or exercise Soiclaiziation with other dogs at a dog park Special dinner such as cooked carrots and boiled chicken breast added to his normal food Interactive game time like hide and seek or fetch Extra cuddles and affection Positive reinforcement when he seeks out interaction with you If Lucas is still not acting himself in a a weeks time, vomits or has diarrhoea, loses his appetite, seems I. Yes dogs can grieve and get lonely. Most dogs enjoy having company so getting another dog could be a good idea if you have the time and energy for another dog. You may consider a rescue dog, that way you can try them together and make sure Rosie likes the new dog and they get along. Young puppies can be very annoying to a grown dog and Rosie may not adjust well especially as you will need to spend more time with a puppy and may inadvertently neglect giving Rosie the time with you that she needs. Fostering a dog also is a good option as you can help a dog in need and if it's not a good fit for you and Rosie it will leave when it finds the right home. Many people keep the foster dog after they get to know them and they settle into the home. A puppy can be a good solution too if done right and it would certainly get Rosie up and playing again! Animals do show emotion and it very well could be that she is grieving or missing your 12 year old dog. If they were together for a long time, and now your other dog is missing, this is a big change in Kita's environment not having her friend around. I would recommend providing her with plenty of toys to play with and take her out a lot. If this is due to emotional stress, it should hopefully resolve with time. If any new symptoms develop I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Kita and test her blood for any abnormal changes. I hope this helps! Try getting him out and going places with you if he likes rides. Make play dates with friends who have dogs so he can play and have the company of other dogs. If you are ready, consider adopting another pet so he has a playmate and companionship. Try gently encouraging him to play with you, teach him tricks or get him involved in a group activity like agility. I hope you can find him something to spark his interest and get him engaged again.

In general, we recommend that a male and female dog will tend to get along the best if you have your option of genders.
