My unneutered puppy has a raw tear on his scrotum. Is it serious?

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

It sounds like he could have a bacterial skin infection and may need an antibiotic. Have your vet take a look at him to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or corticosteroid to help. You could aslo bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-soothe, to see if that helps.

Poor Timmy! That looks very painful. It's difficult to say for sure from just the picture but it appears that Timmy's scrotum and testicles are infected or even that the scrotum has ruptured. Tummy needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away as he will likely need surgery and prescription antibiotics to treat this issue. He will need to wear an e-collar to prevent him from licking the area. He will also need prescription pain medication as this looks very painful. Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. If Tomy sat in something irritating, it may have lead to him licking and chewing at his scrotum. I would recommend getting a plastic cone and placing this around his head and using an ointment such as Sentry Wound Cream which can be found online or at your local PetCo. If the wound does not improve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Tomy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! This may be a skin infection of the scrotum, or an infection of the testicles. This is not uncommon to see in unneutered males, but can be somewhat difficult to treat. Unfortunately, without examining Ace it's not possible to diagnose the specific problem and recommend treatment. It's best if you can take Ace to a vet within the next day or two, so they can have a good look and recommend the best treatment. For now, I recommend cleaning the scrotum with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) twice a day in case the scrotum is infected. Avoid rubbing or squeezing the area, because this can cause more damage than good. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.

Deep cuts usually require stitches. I recommend to take Tudfy into see his veterinarian today. He will likely get antibiotics as well. Make sure Tuffy does not lick the area as this may make them worse. Make him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If you can’t get into the veterinarian today, you can wash the area gently and pay dry. You can apply sterile petroleum jelly to the wounds to keep the tissue moist.
