My Yorkie has a prolapsed anus or rectum and is scooting. What to do?

Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

It is a little difficult to say exactly what is going on with Daisy - she may have a recital prolapse (a condition where some of the tissue in the rectum actually comes out) or chronic irritation if she is scooting on carpeted areas. Scooting may be related to anal gland impactions, infections, or intestinal parasites. I recommend having Daisy seen by a vet as soon as possible because she is likely uncomfortable and the conditions above require treatment. I hope all is well!

I agree that does look pretty severe, and I'm concerned with how red the tissue is in the picture. The problem with a rectal prolapse is that if it is left uncorrected for too long, the circulation of blood to that area becomes compromised and the tissue can die. Quinn needs to see a vet now to have this treated. I can't say how much it would cost to fix, as it may be able to be replaced manually, but it may require stitches to keep it in place. In addition, she may need sedation to have it replaced, and she may need testing to diagnose the initial cause of the rectal prolapse so that can be treated to prevent this from happening again. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hi, this is a prolapsed rectum, a part of your dog's intestines is coming out through his anus and the longer it stays out the more severe the situation will get. You need to take him to see a vet ASAP. You might need to sign him over to a vet or an organisation that can treat him other ways he is going to deteriorate without treatment and end up just having euthanasia as the only option. If left untreated not only he will die but he will also suffer extensively .. which is not acceptable. Please have him checked over ASAP.

I cant see the vulva/vaginal area in this photo so I can't tell you whether or not it looks like there is a prolapse. Most often "scooting" can sometimes be a sign of anal gland irritation. Take her to your vet for an exam. An exam will be able to let you know for certain whether or not there is a prolapse of any kind. A rectal exam will allow your vet to determine if the anal glands might be bothering her, and they can express the anal glands if needed which may provide relief. Poor Roe! I agree, the pictures do look consistent with a rectal prolapse. If at all possible, try to find an emergency vet or a vet on call for after hours emergencies in your area for more urgent care, as it sounds as though Roe is uncomfortable based on his behavior. If there are vets available in your area, you can try to put an e-collar (cone) on Roe until you can get to the vet in the morning. This will prevent him from licking or chewing any prolapsed tissue, as this would make matters worse. You can also apply some water based lubricants (such as KY jelly) to the prolapsed tissue to prevent it from drying out. I hope that all goes well.
