Why is my dog's private area sometimes hard, but he acts normal?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. From what I can see in the photo, it's hard to tell what this is. It could be a mass or tumor of some kind, or possibly something like an infected anal gland or even a perineal hernia. It doesn't look normal, so I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked in person. Your veterinarian can palpate the area to get a better idea of what's going on, and may recommend a biopsy or other testing if needed.

It is difficult to know how concerning this is. The main concern would be pain causing him to tense up the way he did. Pain can come in the form of a pinched nerve, a bad back or a compressed disc. Less common sources of pain would be pancreatic or intestinal pain. Is there a potential that he had a seizure? I recommend to play it safe and have him examined by his veterinarian. The doctor will check him for back or neck issues as well as palpate his abdomen. This is the best way to make sure he is comfortable. I hope this helps.

When dogs are frequently straining to poop, this can indicate irritation within the large bowel of the intestines - this is called tenesmus (or straining). I'm sorry to hear platanito isn't feeling himself. He may be having episodes of stomach or intestinal pain that could cause him to tense his belly the way you are describing. If this is the case it can be caused by eating things that inflame the stomach or pancreas and you can offer him a very bland diet (boiled chicken breast and white rice OR chicken baby food for example) until your appointment with the vet. Another reason they can appear to tense their belly, lay down and be hesitant to move is back pain. If this is the case it's important to keep him very quiet and prevent jumping until his vet evaluates him. I hope he is feeling better very soon.

Hello. Generally, if there is some obstruction, a pet will be very painful in their abdomen often accompanied by vomiting or retching, loss of appetite, lethargy & possibly bloating. A constipated dog will spend much time hunched up as if trying to have a bowel movement or there can actually be pooching of the anal region. If Dixie seems to have a fairly normal appetite, there is no vomiting, & her vulva is swollen, then she is probably just coming into heat. Your veterinarian can determine very quickly if anything is wrong, so if Dixie's behavior continues to concern you, please have her examined as soon as convenient. This small red bulge is likely his rectum, and he is clearly pushing very hard if that is appearing. He will be in discomfort if he's straining that hard to poop, and I would have Koda seen by a vet today. It's not normal to have his rectum bulge out when he's trying to pass feces, and he may need medications to stop this.
