My dog's poop has a worm. Is it a maggot? Do I need to see a vet?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Worms do cause diarrhea and a very high worm burden (amount) can cause severe disease. However, if the puppy is eating, playing and drinking, and is acting normally, then you can wait until tomorrow. I would just inform the new owners about the worms, and have them bring Dan to the vet right away. The vet will get proper deworming performed, as well as vaccines. Best of luck with them!

From the picture it it looks like some type of maggot. I am suspicious that he probably ate this and that it isn’t a parasite. However, if vomiting continues he should be evaluated by your veterinarian. Also taking in a fresh poop sample to look for intestinal parasite eggs. If you haven’t thrown the maggot away you can throw it in a zip lock bag and take it in with you as well. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

The longer feces sits outside on the grass the more likely free living nematodes will come to the stool or flies will lay eggs that become maggots. Interceptor is a great way to deworm dogs monthly. But to be 100% sure that your dogs do not have parasites, collect a fresh stool sample from BOTH dogs and drop them off at your vet to have them check for worms. Good luck!

If your dog has maggots in the stools the maggots have arrived after he had done the stools, they are not inside him, but you may be confusing maggots with worms, in that case he would need a worming tablet which you can get from a pet shop or veterinary clinic.

The most likely diseases are as follows: 1. Parvo, a virus that primarily attacks the immune system and intestines of dogs and is very lethal if left without supportive care. 2. Intestinal parasites which can cause intestinal blockage and even anemia (depletion of red blood cells). 3. Other viruses with varying severities. This is not an exhaustive list, just the most common things for a puppy. They will all lead to dehydration and other secondary issues which can all be severe enough to cause death. Whatever the underlying disease, he looks very ill and needs attention from a veterinarian immediately. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. He is only 6 months so intestinal parasites are common. I hope this helps and I wish Brady the best!

You are correct that the vomiting and diarrhea could be side effects of the surgery, but it should have cleared up if it was two days ago. You are correct that it could be due to intestinal worms, but given that he is still sick, I think it would be best for Diesel to see a vet first before giving it to him. I would want to make sure it's safe to give to him now, and I can't say that for certain without seeing him in person. For now, I would feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts to see if that helps settle his stomach, and he should see a vet in the morning.
