Why is my dog's penis bent or hooked at the tip? Is it normal?

It's not a weird question! The dog's penis contains a bone called the os penis. This bone can give the penis a white color if the tissues are pulled tight on it. It's normal, and I wouldn't worry about it unless he's excessively licking at it, straining to urinate, or has blood in his urine :-)

Your dog may have been licking his penis tip a bit excessively and therefore it appears swollen, If the swelling does not subside within the next day or two and/or if he cannot retract the penis tip all the way into the prepuce, or if the color changes, then you will need to have him examined by your vet, He may need some medications or ointment to reduce the swelling and to keep the tip from drying out.

That could be due to a paraphimosis, which is basically when the foreskin becomes trapped behind the glans penis, and cannot be pulled back in normal position. Chronic paraphimosis should be treated as glans penis can get inflamed/traumatized. If not paraphimosis the sign you described could be completely normal and due to physiological constant excitement. I would recommend recommend a check up to rule out paraphimosis.

Hello and thank you for your questions about Jonesy. It's difficult to know if this is normal or not without being able to examine him. Some dogs do have a protrusion above the urethral opening on their penis and it's often lighter colored than the rest of the tissue. This is normal. However, if you are noticing him licking more than normal, this often indicates discomfort. Young male dogs, especially if they are not neutered, often get infections in the prepuce and this can cause excessive licking and often an increase in discharge. Male dogs can also get bladder infections which can also cause increased licking. Since Jonesy cannot talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to have him examined this week. These knots sound like a normal structure change for a sexually maturing male dog. If You can possibly provide a picture then I would be able to tell you with more accuracy. Signs to watch out for, that indicate an infection include; Discharge Swelling of the prepuce or penis Redness Foul odor Pain Difficulties with urination Penis which protrudes and cannot return to prepuce If you notice any of these signs start by placing an e-collar to prevent Chewy form licking he area and potentially causing damage or introducing infection. The tip of the prepuce can look like that because you can see the inside tissue of the prepuce. I would assume that you can see if better now since the hair has been removed. Unless he is uncomfortable and licking his penis I wouldn't take him in. I hope this helps!

Yes it is. He could be suffering from priapism, which is an abnormally long-lasting erection. A dog's penis is not meant to be exposed all the time and will dry out and become cracked and covered with debris, like carpet fuzz if this problem is not addressed by your veterinarian right away. If it continues to happen and he is not neutered, I suggest having him neutered as this will lessen the amount of male hormone in his system that can trigger this behavior and condition.
