My dog pees before I can put on his harness. Any quick solutions?

If there is a specific pattern in the behaviour then re-organising the routine may help to rebuild a new pattern. Getting her to come, sit and receive a treat somewhere else in the house and then putting on the leash as he praises her may help to bypass the behaviour until she builds up more confidence. Revisiting basic recall/sit/wait training during walks and ball play by with may help to improve her confidence also

Your little girl sounds a bit nervous. Some dogs that are a little more submissive in nature can be nervous urinators. Meaning that when someone approaches them or they get excited they may urinate. This often gets better as they get older and gain more confidence, but can take some work. Can you try to change how you approach her with the leash? You could try to get down on her level with the leash behind your back and ask her to come to you instead of you going to her. You can also try distracting her with a treat while you put on the leash. If it seems to be related to approaching her head you can try having her wear a harness that way you dont have to approach her head. These are all some general ideas but you really just have to find out what her trigger is and change your routine to what works best for her. Hopefully with confidence it will improve with time. The flip side would be if she is urinating in the house at other points in time, then this would be more concerning for a physical problem such as a UTI that would prompt evaluation by your family vet. I'm sorry to hear of your problems with Borkem. If possible, I would try to start associating a word with the act of peeing and pooping. The best way to do this would be to take Borkem to an area that you can have him off leash and watching him carefully. When he pees or poops, say "good pee!" immediately and reward him with a high-value treat such as hot dogs or cheese. You will need to do this consistently over several days to create the association between the command and the act. Once Borkem understands that you would like him to pee or poop when you say pee or poop (or whatever command you choose to use) it will be easier to communicate what you want from him when he is on a leash. Clicker training can be helpful to help dogs learn associations in situations like this. He’s just excited and playing. Many dogs do this and they are not afraid of the leash. I would work on having him sit for a treat and ask him to stay while you attach the leash. With practice and treats he should be able to stay calm. He wants to play so this behavior is trying to get you into a game. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise and play with him outside in the yard, not in the house, so he wants to go out to play. Soon he’ll figure out he can’t go until you attach the leash. When you get home, don't say anything or acknowledge Rogue in any way. Walk over to his crate, open it, then walk immediately to the door and outside. Once outside, say the phrase you have been using for housetraining (do your business, etc). Once he has gotten up from completely eliminating, then lay on the praise and attention. This will help improve his control and decrease accidents as he grows. Good luck!

Poor Loki! I'm sure he's very confused by all of these changes. If he's always been accustomed to "doing his business" off leash in the yard, he may not know what to do when he's on-leash - this is a common problem for many dogs who have never pottied on-leash before. Rather than using a retractable leash, which keeps constant tension on the collar, I would recommend getting a long line for him - this is a very long, lightweight leash (up to 40-50' long) that he can easily drag without noticing. Attach the leash to his collar, and follow at a distance keeping the leash loose with no tension at all. This will allow him to feel like he's loose, and he should have an easier time going to the bathroom without tension on his collar and having you so close to him.

You can try training Harley to urinate on command. When you take her for a walk bring some high-value treats. Pick a command to use. Once she starts urinating, give her the command and reward her with the high-value treats. Make sure to do this consistently every single time. Some dogs can be trained in this fashion so that when you give the command to urinate, they do. Dogs are individuals however and some will take to this and some will not. Otherwise it may not be realistic that you can expect her to potty outside right away. If she is urinating in the house, when you take her outside and she does not go after 15 minutes, carry her back to her crate and put her in the crate for 30 minutes. Then carry her back outside for another 15 minutes. You repeat this until she potties outside. Praise and reward her and then she can have freedom in the house. Most pets will catch on to this quickly.
