Is monthly gas and diarrhea common in Papillons? What can I do?

Hello, I am so sorry Paris is not feeling well. I hope your veterinarian has examined her stool for intestinal parasites & ruled out the possibility that this is a virus such as Parvo. Even if there are no parasites, I would still deworm Paris with fenbendazole for a minimum of 3 days, possibly up to 5 days using the same dose each day. Then I would put Paris on complete fast for a minimum of 12-24 hours. After this fasting period, start her on a bland diet of very small amounts of 25% boiled, skinless chicken & 75% boiled, white rice. You can also use a little low fat cottage cheese. Give her frequent small meals of only this food for the next 3 days, then start to transition her back to her regular diet. If the still has the diarrhea after 3 days using a bland diet, you can repost asking for me & we will try to figure this out. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. 

Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. 

 If your dog’s current treatment does not resolve the diarrhea after a few days he may need a more extensive workout and treatment.

Poor Daisy! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. Definitely keep her out of the cat box. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. This is not normal and could indicate a food intolerance, or infection. You can try to see if a bland diet and probiotics help to reduce the gas and mucousy poo. You can buy bland diets at the pet store (best option), or make a bland diet for him at home (boiled chicken, duck, or turkey plus potato, rice, pumpkin, etc.). If the his stools and gas improve with this diet, then it would be best to switch him to another food with different ingredients. If this doesn't help after 1-2 weeks of starting the diet, then I would be more suspicious of an infection and recommend he goes to a vet for an evaluation. Without seeing Diesel it is hard to say. I would first make sure he is intestinal parasite free. There a several different parasites and there is not one deworming medicine that treats them all. I recommend bringing a stool sample to your vet to look at under the microscope. Otherwise the issues could be coming from his food. Make sure you are feeding a high quality puppy food like Iams, Science Diet/Hills, or Purina One. Good luck and kisses to Diesel!

She may have a more serious condition such as pancreatitis. This is common in her breed. It can be diagnosed by a blood test. I hope this information helps!

Inflammatory bowel disease is not common in a puppy but it could be dietary intolerance from something in the diet. Other potential causes include Giardia, bacterial overgrowth, or pancreatic insufficiency. Your veterinarian likely has a ‘next step’ already planned. I recommend to discuss Mable!s diarrhea with your veterinarian. They may want to try an antibiotic and a probiotic along with a bland diet to see if that resolves the diarrhea. They may also recommend protozoa testing, a fecal culture and/or pancreatic enzyme testing. A diet trial with a hydrolyzed protein is another potential option. Since there are many causes of diarrhea, each one needs to be worked through. I hope this helps and best of luck.
