My Yorkshire is panting and won't drink water in stormy weather. Why?

It could be stress related to the hurricane or there could be a medical condition. Panting is usually a sign of stress or pain. I would keep offering food and water and if he is still not eating in another 24 hours, I would find a vet to take him to (I would take him sooner if he starts vomiting or having diarrhea). It could be due to excessive heat that she is panting, but it could also be due to something else such as a heart condition or pain. Given your geographical location, I do not believe the excessive panting is due to hot weather. I would definitely recommend having Storm checked by a vet first.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Anxiety can defi itwly cause the excessive panting. Storm anxiety and a warm ambient temperature can definitely lead to the panting you are seeing. As long as he hasn't had any respiratory distress recently and that this started just when the thunderstorm hit, he should be ok to monitor at home. Reassuring him and turning down the temperature in the house may help. I would look into some things to help with anxiety such as adaption collar and diffuser. If the anxiety is getting bad enough, I would consult with your vet and see about anti anxiety medications as an option for goalie. I hope this helps Out! With her age I recommend letting a veterinarian listen to her lungs. It can be heart or respiratory. If she has a murmur you may want to consider taking her to a cardiologist to have her heart evaluated. That could be an early stage sign of tracheal collapse, or there may be a inflammation of the trachea or first airways (throat). Tracheal collapse is quite common in yorkies and is usually diagnosed by performing a radiographic evaluation of neck and chest. I would recommend a check up as if otherwise the signs are due to an inflammatory disease, anti-inflammatory and possibly antibiotics are required. Not to state what seems obvious, but it sounds like Darwin has become sensitive/anxious about the wind, and likely can't calm down even though perhaps it has died down or stopped. Sudden changes in pressure and weather can be very disconcerting for some dogs. Thundershirts ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/thundershirt-heather-gray-dog-anxiety-solution ) may help, or your vet can prescribe medications to reduce noise sensitivity and anxiety. Sileo may be a good choice, and it works quickly.
