What causes a dog to pant and have bloody urine or red discharge?

Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer. It could be from an infection, irritation/trauma, or possibly bladder stones. Your vet can test a urine sample for infection and then prescribe medications to help treat the problem. You could also consider having him neutered to help decrease the problem in the future.

This behavior can actually be a sign of a UTI or bladder stones. I'd have Monty seen by a vet for this for blood work and a urinalysis. Using these tests, the vet can diagnose if he has one of the things I mentioned above, and can treat him. I'd take him into a vet today. I hope this helps!

Bloody urine in an uneutered male dog could be caused by stones in the bladder or lower urinary tract, or prostatic or bladder infections. Scrappy would need to be evaluated by a veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment. And give that he is feeling so badly I would take him in right away. They will likely collect a urine sample and may visualize the bladder and prostate with X-rays or an ultrasound.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Bloody urine can have a number of different causes. It can be due to a problem in the urinary tract-- such as a severe urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a bladder tumor. Those things may also cause her to urinate frequently in small amounts and/or strain to urinate (but not necessarily). It could also be a problem higher up in her urinary tract--in her ureters (tube from kidney to bladder) or in her kidneys-- again an infection, stone or tumor. The other potential cause of seeing blood in the urine is if she isn't able to form a blood clot properly. If her blood platelets or clotting factors are low or are not working correctly, bleeding can occur within the bladder (or anywhere in the body--bruising under the skin, bleeding around the gums, blood in the stool, bloody nose, blood in the eyes). We can also sometimes see the urine look bloody when its actually a different thing causing the pigment (color). For instance, if she's destroying her red blood cells and the pigment (color) from the red blood cells which is the hemoglobin is ending up in her urine. Also myoglobin (which occurs with massive muscle damage) can result in dark reddish brown urine. Some types of toxic ingestions can also result in reddish brown urine. The seizure on Sunday makes me more concerned that something very serious is going on with her. If she's unable to clot her blood properly she could have a bleed in her brain. Or the seizures may be completely unrelated to the urine. I wish I could offer you a suggestion to treat her at home, but it sounds like you need to have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can.

I would suggest having Bronx checked out by a vet if the bloody urine continues over the next 24 hours. The vet will recommend a urine sample to check for infection, crystals, protein loss, etc. They may also check his prostate via a rectal exam. In the meantime, I would encourage Bronx to drink more water and take him out to pee a bit more often to flush out any potential bacteria or crystals in his urinary tract.
