Puppy's pale, soft, smelly poop: Is it a food reaction or gut issue?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Personally the color doesn't bother me but the consistency does. That is diarrhea. It is too soft and not formed. I would go back to the Royal Canin food as it sounds like he digests that one better. Be sure though that he has had his stool tested for intestinal parasites and is up to date on his DHPP vaccines. Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. As long as Remy is acting normally, you don't necessarily need to take him to your veterinarian. You should submit a stool sample though to diagnose intestinal parasites. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If the soft stool does not resolve or if Remy develops lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or vomiting them have him examined by your veterinarian.

Did anyone feed him anything other than his puppy food? If so he may have an upset stomach. He can also have one if he has intestinal parasites or a virus. This is very concerning as it appears to contain blood, mucus and possibly bowel lining. I recommend an oral worm medication, a specialist intestinal or hydrolyzed diet for 6 weeks and a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora to rebalance the bowel and rule out any parasitic causes. A full health check, blood tests and possibly ultrasound/xray if not responding or any weight loss, vomiting or weakness is noted

Hi there, I wouldn't be worried about one stool like this, but if it worsens or there is any vomiting, disinterest in food, or lethargy, that would warrant an emergency exam for a pup his age. Parvovirus is of serious concern if he is not fully vaccinated. If his stools remain soft but he is otherwise well, I'd recommend calling your regular veterinarian. They may recommend an exam or prescribe probiotics or a diet change if they have already seen Cliff. Puppies his age are generally dewormed every two weeks to eliminate all the life cycles of the most common parasites. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soft stools can be normal as they transition from formula to kibble or canned food. If she is otherwise doing well, this may be ok. If it ever becomes consistent diarrhea, have her evaluated by a veterinarian before her scheduled appointment. Keep in mind that it may be best to continue the formula until she is 6 weeks old. Poor Kai! You are correct to be concerned. Diarrhea could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet, infectious diseases, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body (such as a piece of the bones you mentioned), or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. I recommend you make an appointment to take Kai in to the vet, and take in a fecal sample from Kai when you go. Your vet will likely want to test the sample to see what kind of parasites Kai may be dealing with so that they can be treated for accordingly. I recommend that you avoid feeding bones, antlers, and similar objects. Make sure with anything you feed Kai that you are able to easily dent the surface with a fingernail, as anything harder than that could lead to fracturing of the teeth or blockage of the gastrointestinal tract.
