Why is my dog pacing and stretching his neck after dental surgery?

I wouldn't be too concerned at this point if the dental was only just done today. Your dog underwent a pretty significant procedure and may not be the same for a couple of days. Give the pain medication as directed by your veterinarian unless your dog vomits again. If this is the case, call your vet about switching to something else. Post-anesthetic nausea is not uncommon so you might consider giving some pepsid or prilosec if you have any around the house. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Vinnie! Each dog and cat reacts differently to sedation and anesthesia. They feel goofy or strange and can react by pacing and panting. Since Vinnie is a large breed dog be sure that his belly isn't bloated. If he is trying to vomit then I would immediately take him to an emergency Vet. He could also be uncomfortable, if he is due for pain medications then I would give it to him. Try taking him for a quick walk outside then see if you can help him settle down in his bed. See if laying with or next to him helps his settle and sleep. His incision looks fine. I think he may be panting ans shaking from the act of vomiting. If you remember, vomiting is not a good feeling, so when it happened, your dog may have gotten upset. He may be a bit sensitive to the ingredients of the dental twist. I am not a fan of rawhide, as it tends to swell up in the stomach, and can cause an obstruction at the exit of the stomach or in the small intestine, especially if the rawhide was swallowed whole instead of being chewed. So it is likely that he did not chew it very well, and it expanded in the stomach which then reacted by making your dog regurgitate it. The time frame of about half an hour fits s well as this is about how long it takes to moisten and swell the raw hide. I think he will be ok, and there is no need yet to take him to the vet. If he vomits more often or states getting diarrhea or appears lethargic after a while (in a few hours) you should take him to the vet. However at this time I would let him settle down and rest and calm down. Do not give him another twist, though.

Caddy looks really uncomfortable in the photos. It sounds like there is a source of pain, judging from the photos, thid could be pain in the abdomen or in the back or legs. It may also be something simple like full anal glands. I would give him an hour or so to see if he settles in case its just a gassy tummy, but if he doesnt I would take him in for an examination.

Sometimes after dental extractions they can develop a connection between the nasal and oral cavities called a fistula. This can allow oral cavity food, bacteria, saliva, etc. to enter the nose which can sometimes lead to these signs. Often times there may be nasal discharge as well. As well there are other post anesthesia problems that can occur less frequently. Since this sounds like a notable change post dental i would have it evaluated by your family vet. They can look at the extraction sites and do a thorough oral exam (sedation likely required) as well as check for normal airflow via the nose and normal airway function. If you think the sleeping a lot is new as well then this could be related or some other issue. Rechecking some bloodwork will likely be recommended as he is an older pet that underwent anesthesia. Joey would have been put under anesthetic for his dental treatment and that could be causing his symptoms. Dogs can act out of sort after anesthesia. This should pass and I'd keep an eye on him tonight. If he's still acting this way in the morning, then I would take him back into his vet. Best of luck.
