Why does my dog have open wounds on her body with no obvious injury?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 4 months old

My dog, Molly, recently got terrible open wounds under her front left leg, neck and chest. No injury that we know of. What could be the possible cause and what is the condition?

There are many things that can cause this:

* trauma (that you do not know about)
* autoimmune disease
* cancer
* severe bacterial infection

At her age, I would be worried about this coming up all of a sudden. I suggest you get her to your vet for an examination.

    From what I can tell (the photos are very grainy), the wound appears to be healing fine. I suggest you continue treatment as your vet recommended for now.

    I strongly recommend you take her back to your vet for a progress check-up in about 5-7 days. They will be able to tell you better if it looks to be healing well since they saw the initial injury.
