My Rottweiler has an open sore on his back with yellow discharge.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on the pictures it appears that Rocco may have either an open wound or a growth of some kind that has started oozing. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine if he needs stitches, etc based on what the underlying cause for his lesion is and to start any treatment (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory) that may be needed. Based on the photos, it looks like the wound is draining a little, which is a good thing. However, I cannot say with certainty it is not still infected. Given Rumple was just started on antibiotics, he likely needs the full two weeks for it to heal. I would monitor for any pain or swelling in that area, worsening discharge or foul smelling odor or anything else concerning like incompetence, vomiting or diarrhea. If Rumple is otherwise OK, I would say it is fine to continue to monitor him and continue his previously prescribed medication. In fact, I would send these photos to your veterinarian who looked at Rumple two days ago. They would be able to compare the photos and let you know if they think the wound has gotten worse or not. I would clean this using a combined solution of water and betadine (mix until light brown) and keep the area clean. The cyst will likely close back up now that it has ruptured. If it continues to drain material or becomes infected, then I would have a veterinarian take a look at this and plan to have it removed. I hope this helps! Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks likely to be a cyst, which is a benign skin growth that can rupture and exude a thick proteinaceous discharge. I recommend having Roscoe seen by a Vet, as cysts can become infected when they rupture, and Roscoe may need a course of antibiotics. Your vet can then let you know if they have any concerns about the lesion when they’re able to examine it. In the meantime, keep it clean using soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and soak/wipe it clean a few times daily. Hope this helps!

You can clean the area with a mild soap and water then dry thoroughly and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. If it’s not looking better in a couple of days, I would have a vet take a closer look. This sounds like a sudden bacterial skin infection. Well there could be lots of causes the treatment is pretty standard with wound cleaning of the area and usually an antibiotic medication. Your veterinarian will need to see Ryder to determine what antibiotic is appropriate as well as have any topical medication as needed. In the meantime keep the area clean and dry as much as possible but do not apply an ointment as it could trap moisture and lead to further bacterial growth.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chip! From your pictures, Chip's incisions look good! If he has been thrashing he may just caused some mild trauma. The yellow discharge can indicate an infection but it could just be some plasma like fluid. Contact your Vet Monday to add additional sedatives. Check the incisions twice daily. Do not allow scooting or licking. I hope this helps!
