My dog only eats her food if it's warmed up. Why is she so picky?

Small breed dogs tend to be picky eaters, and this is accentuated when the owner gives in and feeds people food. I know it is hard, but you have to try and slowly break this habit by refusing to give her the boiled chicken and only her dog food. Most dogs can go up to 3 days without eating and most will give in within a day or two when they realize nothing else is coming and their only option is the [dog food](https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-to-look-for-when-choosing-your-pet-s-food) that is available to them. It sounds cruel, but this is the only way to break this habit. You can also make sure that you are offering highly palatable, high quality [dog food](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/category/dog/dog-food). Typically grocery store brands are generic and low quality. Try foods like Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo, Halo, or Evo to see if these appeal to her picky nature. You can add canned food to her dry kibble to entice her to want to eat it regularly.

What Mia is doing is training you to feed her what she wants, when she wants it. You can turn it around by sticking with one diet and feeding her on a consistent schedule. Dogs thrive on routine. Prepare her food and leave it down for 30 minutes before picking it up whether she has eaten or not. Repeat this at the next mealtime. Offer no food or treats between meals other than tiny training rewards. Be firm and be consistent. She will not starve. You can warm her food slightly or mix in a bit of warm water to stimulate the appetite. Being that she is young and tiny, watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia and offer a dab of Nutri Cal or Karo syrup if she becomes lethargic. Once she perks up, feed her.

As long as she eats and is not losing weight, don't stress out over it. It is true that smaller breeds can be a bit more finicky. Switching foods would not be recommended as it can lead to gastrointestinal upset and reinforce her finicky nature. Some dogs are just picky eaters or are not very food driven. So we have some dogs, like your typical labrador, that will eat anything and everything within 30 seconds of it being put down, and others that are more picky and graze throughout the day. I would choose one food and stick with it, and she will eventually get hungry and eat it. I am a fan of the purina pro plan line, which is available at most pet stores and is good quality, they also have dry diets, wet diets, and their Savor line has kibbles along with softer/chewy kibbles which my dogs love. If there is some treat that she is very fond of you can mix it in with the food that you want her to eat and slowly decrease the amount of the treat each day so she gets used to the other food. Some people find putting some low sodium chicken broth on the food can entice them to start eating a food and you can slowly decreas the amount placed on the food, or warming food up slightly makes it more appetizing.

Just like people, dogs can become picky eaters, especially if Stella is getting any people food or treats outside of her meal time. Some dogs may hold out in the hopes they get more people food or treats. I would give her food only for a few days with no extras, and set it down for 15 minutes at a time every few hours. Once she's hungry, she should eventually give the food another chance. Once she's back to fully eating only her food, you can then gradually introduce any treats again in moderation.

I see that Willow is a puppy, and she is the right age for teething. That could be why she is acting picky about her food. Try soaking her puppy food in water warm or gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth to soften it up. Also make sure that you don't give her any human food at all or any treats. The only food she should get is her puppy food; if you give her anything else, that will make her pickiness worse. If Molly isn't underweight and your veterinarian has confirmed that she doesn't have any underlying GI issues that might make her not feel well when she eats, then there's no need to constantly switch foods trying to find something to interest her. Many picky dogs are good at training us to do this. :) Instead, you can just offer her food at her regular mealtimes. Leave the food out for 10-15 minutes, then pick up whatever is left and put it away. Offer it again at the next scheduled mealtime. It might take a few days, but she'll eat when she gets hungry. It's a bit like insisting your child eat his vegetables, when he'd rather have ice cream!
