To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I am concerned that Racer either has a reaction to something - like a spider or insect bite, or this could be a type of infection, possibly fungal like cryptococcus. I do recommend you take him in to see your vet tomorrow, they may suggest a needle biopsy to determine what is the cause, or possibly a blood test. I would expect they may suggest antibiotics to cover until results are back. It may be more apparent on physical exam as to the cause.

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hi there! It does look like Fynn does have a small nodule/mass. This could be a benign growth such as a focal infection site or a malignant growth like a mast cell tumor. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Fynn evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!

It is hard to tell from the photo the characteristics of this bump. I would say it is possible it is related to trauma and I would monitor for now but it could also be a tumor (either benign or malignant). My recommendation would be to monitor it for the next 24 to 48 hours, and if it is still there in the same size or it is bigger I would have a veterinarian examin the area.
