My Chihuahua has muscle spasms. Is it normal or a serious health issue?

She could have a calcium deficiency from nursing the pups and being so young and small herself. If the twitching continues or her condition deteriorates then please take her in immediately since this condition can cause seizures and become life threatening very quickly. Tremors can be due to many different underlying causes and honestly, there are many times we cannot find an underlying cause. If this is a one time thing then I suggest you monitor him and if it happens again, get a video and then make an appointment with your vet. It may never happen again. It is hard for me to comment much without seeing what he is actually doing. My first thought is that it could be a pinched nerve. Other options: * focal seizure * muscle pain/injury * something that is irritating his skin in that area You know him best so if you are truly worried then there is no harm in taking him to your vet now for an exam. It could be a muscle spasm caused by a sprain/strain, neurological disorder, etc. If it continues, have your vet take a look at her to determine if treatment is needed. She may need an anti-inflammatory to treat the problem.

I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at her. These spasms could be due to discomfort, neurological (seizures), infection or systemic disease. Hello. Shivering like this could be an indication of an elevated temperature, pain, of a fear of something, perhaps a noise Paco heard ( like distant thunder, gun shots or fireworks ). Since he is otherwise acting normally & eating fine, then just keep him comfortable & see how he is in the morning. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If all that is normal then consider starting medications. i wish Bella the best!

Centralized muscle spasms, could indicate a neurological condition that can vary in severity, so it is hard to tell without examining him myself and running the necessary testing. However, if he seems stable otherwise I wouldn't worry too much. Especially if the spasm seems to only affect his jaw. The most important thing is to monitor him for overt signs of a serious problem and to have him evaluated by your local veterinarian soon for a full neurological work-up. This does not sound like it is cause for an ER vet visit; however you should aim to get him examined within the next 1-3 days if possible.
